Civil Practice Legal Internship at The Legal Aid Society

We are seeking dynamic, passionate, and creative legal interns committed to our mission of advocating for the rights of low-income New Yorkers. As a Human Rights Advocacy and Litigation Intern, you will work directly under the supervision of Civil Practice attorneys in various NYC Borough offices and specialized units.

Job Description

As a Human Rights Advocacy and Litigation Intern, your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Drafting motions, pleadings, memoranda of law, and affidavits to support client cases
  • Conducting legal research to inform advocacy strategies and litigation efforts
  • Attending court and administrative hearings with attorneys to advocate for clients' rights
  • Assisting with client interviews and providing support to clients throughout the legal process
Requirements

To be eligible for this internship, you must be a current law student in good standing (preferably 2L) with a demonstrated commitment to serving racially and socioeconomically oppressed communities. Relevant clinical program or work experience is preferred but not required. You should also possess excellent communication and collaboration skills, as well as the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.

Benefits

This is an unpaid internship; however, we offer a stipend opportunity through the Howard Rossbach fund. To be considered for this stipend, applicants must demonstrate financial need and lack funding for their internship. The selected intern will receive a $1,000 stipend, which will be treated as taxable income.

Salary and Benefits

This internship does not provide a salary. However, successful candidates may be eligible for the stipend mentioned above.
