Key Responsibilities:

POSITION OBJECTIVE

The primary role involves the operation and upkeep of heating, ventilation, and mechanical systems within designated facilities.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

Conduct regular inspections of buildings to ensure optimal temperature control. Access all public spaces, including classrooms, offices, hallways, and restrooms, to assess comfort levels; adjust thermostats as needed; operate ventilation systems appropriately.

Oversee the functionality of pumps, condensate tanks, valves, water heaters, reduction valves, swimming pool systems, boilers, and plumbing infrastructure. Safely access equipment located at various heights and positions on campus; utilize hand tools effectively. Maintain cleanliness in plenum chambers, fans, boiler rooms, and other areas designated for HVAC operations.

Perform necessary repairs on mechanical systems. Replace components such as stems and seats on valves and traps up to one inch in size; manage fluid flow by operating gate, globe, and butterfly valves.

Replace and clean air filters. Navigate filter chambers that may be positioned at varying heights and angles, handling bulky filter replacement boxes; adjust and replace belts on mechanical equipment. Respond promptly to service requests.

All Operating Engineers are classified as "Essential Personnel" and are expected to report during university emergency situations.

Additional responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

High school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Completion of training in a recognized Stationary Engineer Trade School or apprenticeship program.

Possession of a Third Class Steam Engineer's license from the City of Detroit.

Some relevant experience in pipefitting and general maintenance is preferred.

Experience in refrigeration is advantageous.

Ability to access equipment at various heights and angles, from below ground level to several stories high.

Capability to work in diverse environmental conditions, including potentially hazardous situations, while adhering to safety protocols.

Must obtain security clearance.
