About Us:
Mid-Minnesota Legal Assistance (MMLA) is looking for 2L and 3L law students to join our Minneapolis office. Candidates must be available for a minimum of 10 hours per week throughout the semester or academic year. Practice Areas:
Consumer/Homeownership: The Consumer Unit assists clients dealing with debt collection, unfair debt practices, and potential foreclosure. Students will engage in tasks such as:
- Claiming income protections to prevent garnishment of wages and bank accounts, including drafting legal arguments.
- Defending clients against unjust debt claims, involving preparation of legal documents.
- Disputing inaccuracies on credit reports through correspondence with credit bureaus and creditors.
- Conducting legal research and casework to support homeowners.
Students will have substantial client interaction and will meet regularly with supervising attorneys to discuss case strategies. A commitment of 12-15 hours per week is required.
Immigration Law Project (ILP): This project provides legal support in various immigration matters, including deportation defense and citizenship applications. Students are expected to commit 10-15 hours per week.
Tax Clinic: MMLA's Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) offers representation for clients facing tax disputes. Responsibilities include assisting clients in negotiating with the IRS and addressing issues like identity theft and tax debt defenses.

Compensation:
This position is unpaid. Candidates may explore work-study options if eligible. Academic credit may also be available in collaboration with educational institutions.
