About the Role

The University of Pennsylvania seeks a highly skilled and experienced Executive Director of Legal Affairs and Compliance to join its team. This is a unique opportunity to work in a world-renowned institution, driving innovation and excellence in research and education.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee legal matters for the Abramson Cancer Center, reporting directly to the ACC Director and the General Counsel of the University of Pennsylvania.
  • Perform the duties of the ACC Office of Legal Affairs, supervising staff and ensuring compliance with industry regulations.
  • Represent the ACC on legal matters, collaborating with other offices on campus, such as the PSOM Office of Clinical Research (OCR), the Office of Research Services (ORS), and the University's Penn Center for Innovation.
  • Advise cancer center faculty on relationships with industry, particularly around innovation in technology development and clinical trial performance.
  • Structure, draft, and negotiate complex research collaborations, safeguarding Penn IP interests.
  • Negotiate sponsored, collaboration, vendor/lab services, data use agreements, material transfer agreements, and other contracts where Penn IP interests are implicated.
  • Coordinate all aspects of agreements, including export control issues around Penn biological samples and data.
  • Supervise industry contracts from other Penn Medicine locations, such as LGH, Princeton, Presby, and CCH.

Requirements

  • J.D. degree (required) or Doctor of Law and 5 to 7 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Extensive experience in contract negotiation or other related legal fields in biomedicine.
  • Understanding of clinical trial legal contracting and intellectual property protection.
