POSITION SUMMARY:

The Culinary Support Specialist plays a vital role in assisting the kitchen team with daily operations. This position is essential in establishing a positive kitchen environment through exemplary work ethic, attitude, and teamwork. Responsibilities include preparing ingredients for meals, managing salad bars and bakery items, maintaining cleanliness, and supporting cooks in meal preparation and service. This role also focuses on minimizing food waste through innovative use of surplus items and proper storage techniques, overseeing inventory in the storeroom, rotating stock in coolers, ensuring cleanliness and order, and assisting with food deliveries to verify incoming stock.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assist in the daily operations of the camp's food service.
  2. Prepare food items, including washing, peeling, and chopping.
  3. Ensure proper food temperatures and assess food quality.
  4. Set up food, supplies, and utensils for dining service.
  5. Support inventory management processes.
  6. Communicate inventory changes to the Food and Sanitation Coordinator.
  7. Maintain routine sanitation and upkeep of kitchen equipment and facilities.
  8. Uphold high standards of cleanliness, sanitation, and safety.
  9. Clean, sanitize, and maintain all food preparation equipment, kitchen floors, and storage areas.
  10. Wash, dry, and fold kitchen linens (towels, aprons, etc.).
  11. Wash all utensils, pots, pans, and dining hall dishes.
  12. Reduce waste, reuse items, and recycle whenever possible.
  13. Adhere to all established health code regulations.
  14. Collaborate effectively as a member of the camp staff team.
  15. Maintain open communication with administrative camp staff.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Must be at least 16 years old.
  2. Must have or obtain Missouri Serve Safe certification.
  3. Possess a practical understanding of food service, storage, and cleanliness standards.
  4. Exemplify the YMCA core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
  5. Able to work a flexible schedule to accommodate program changes.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This position requires meeting certain physical demands to successfully perform essential functions. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.

  3. Endurance to work in varying temperatures, including heat and steam.
  4. Physical ability to respond to emergency situations and assist campers as needed.
  5. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  6. Endurance for prolonged standing, bending, walking, and stretching.
  7. Requires manual dexterity to operate kitchen equipment.
  8. Work irregular hours with limited equipment and facilities.
