Position Overview:
Join the University of Chicago Medicine as a Surgical Services Nurse in the CCD-OR.


As a Surgical Services Nurse, you will be tasked with delivering nursing care that is purpose-driven and tailored to the requirements of individuals, families, and communities during both health and illness phases.


In this capacity, the Surgical Services Nurse will provide care grounded in knowledge, skills, and professional standards that facilitate the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care.

Each professional nurse holds primary responsibility and accountability for all nursing care delivered by themselves and those under their supervision.

The nurse is an integral part of a multidisciplinary team that collaborates to provide comprehensive care to patients.

Key Responsibilities


Employ assessment skills to identify patient needs to deliver holistic patient and family care across all age groups, from neonates to geriatrics.


Recognize the educational needs of patients and their families that directly impact recovery, and develop effective teaching strategies to enhance understanding.


Execute nursing interventions based on scheduled procedures, patient evaluations, and developmental requirements, integrating these actions into a documented care plan.


Assess the effectiveness of care provided and adjust nursing interventions to meet the evolving needs or conditions of the patient.

Ensure accurate documentation in patient care records.

Successfully complete unit-specific and hospital competencies as required.


Competently administer nursing treatments and procedures in accordance with hospital policies and nursing practices within the clinical specialty, as verified by clinical rotational checklists.

Maintain current CPR certification.

Prepare and administer medications/treatments as per physician orders, utilizing your knowledge to ensure patient safety.

Collaborate with other healthcare team members to provide a comprehensive approach to patient care. Communicate changes to all team members as necessary.

Document all aspects of patient care from admission to discharge in compliance with hospital policies.

Incorporate discharge planning into daily practice to ensure a seamless transition for patients from hospital to home.

Deliver cost-effective care through efficient use of time, resources, and personnel.

Actively engage in unit staff meetings.

Assist the unit in achieving its goals and objectives.


Contribute to fostering a work environment that promotes positive staff morale, motivation, and commitment among all participants in patient care.

Assume charge nurse duties as assigned by the Clinical Director or designee.

Share in leadership responsibilities at various levels by supervising, directing, and educating other staff as it pertains to patient care.

Participate in unit initiatives to enhance staff retention.

Adapt to changes within the unit by demonstrating support and cooperation.

Exhibit reliability and accountability to the unit and the Nursing Department.

Integrate professional standards into practice by utilizing written nursing care plans.

Engage in Quality Improvement data analysis, conclusions, and recommended changes.

Participate in the preceptor program, either as a preceptor or by assisting those in that role.

Attend scheduled in-service training sessions.

Required Qualifications

Associate Degree in Nursing; BSN degree or higher preferred.


Associate Degree Nurses are required to enroll in a BSN program within six (6) to nine (9) months of hire and make progress toward completing their BSN degree within 30 months.

ADN nurses receive 100% tuition reimbursement for a BSN degree from an accredited institution.

Current RN Illinois license

Graduate of an accredited nursing program

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in trauma care

One or more years of surgical scrub experience
