Job Title: Outpatient Surgery Coder

We are seeking a highly skilled Outpatient Surgery Coder to join our team at the University of Washington. As a key member of our Enterprise Records and Health Information department, you will play a critical role in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of our medical records.

Job Summary:

The Outpatient Surgery Coder will be responsible for reviewing and coding medical records for outpatient surgical procedures, ensuring that all necessary information is captured and coded correctly. This includes analyzing medical records to assign International Classification of Diseases (ICD), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) codes to ensure optimal reimbursement and compliance with state and federal guidelines.

Responsibilities:
  • Reviews electronic and other documentation to identify billable ambulatory surgery procedures and services requiring facility fee coding
  • Resolves coding edits related to procedures and services charged during the ambulatory surgery visit
  • Consults with physicians and clinical department representatives to verify services were rendered and documented
  • Maintains three-day coding turnaround times for ambulatory surgery accounts based on date of service
  • Identifies and escalates impacts to timely coding and charge capture, and avoidable delays for billing and reimbursement
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent and three years of coding experience or equivalent education/experience
  • Certified as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or other relevant certification
