Join the Student Conservation Association as an Environmental Resource Guardian

We invite you to be part of a vital program dedicated to preserving natural landscapes while acquiring essential conservation skills.

This internship spans 16 weeks and offers a competitive weekly living stipend along with a monthly housing allowance. Additionally, participants may qualify for an educational award upon completion of their service.

Your Daily Responsibilities:

As an Environmental Resource Guardian, you will:

  • Canoe to assess various campsites and engage with visitors about sustainable camping practices.
  • Spend significant time in the field, often working independently or alongside designated personnel.
  • Travel by canoe and on foot through challenging terrains and adverse weather conditions.
  • Occasionally camp in remote areas to conduct site inspections and maintenance.

Key Duties Include:

  • Restoring impacted sites to promote ecological health.
  • Conducting routine maintenance on campsites and trails using hand tools.
  • Educating visitors on the responsible use and conservation of natural resources.
  • Encouraging adherence to sustainable practices.
  • Providing guidance to users regarding trails and campsites.
  • Inspecting and reporting on the condition of trails and campsites.
  • Assisting with various conservation projects and volunteer initiatives.
  • Supporting emergency response efforts under the guidance of a Forest Ranger.
  • Maintaining accurate records and submitting reports on daily activities and maintenance needs.

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Preferred qualifications include an Associate's Degree or relevant coursework in environmental science or a related field, or equivalent experience in conservation.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • Must possess essential camping gear and hiking equipment.
  • Physical capability to perform fieldwork in rugged conditions is necessary.
  • Experience in canoeing is essential.
