Overview:

Under the supervision of the Director of Surgical Services at Kern Medical Center, the Surgical Nurse Assistant plays a vital role in the operating room as part of the surgical team. This position involves providing direct patient care and assisting the surgeon during surgical procedures. The Surgical Nurse Assistant must possess documented expertise, training, and skills obtained through specialized education and supervised practice. This role requires adherence to established protocols and procedures.

Position: Surgical Nurse Assistant

Compensation:

The compensation for this role includes a base salary plus a 6% premium. Additional compensation may be available through differentials, incentives, and bonuses, along with eligibility for participation in the Kern County Employees' Retirement Plan.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Foster a compassionate environment by building trusting relationships with patients and their families.
  • Assist in the positioning, prepping, and draping of patients, or perform these tasks independently as directed by the surgeon.
  • Communicate promptly with the operating surgeon regarding any changes in the patient's condition.
  • Maintain homeostasis by applying electrocautery and managing surgical instruments effectively.
  • Support the surgeon in controlling bleeding, suturing, and other surgical tasks.
  • Ensure proper exposure during procedures through effective use of instruments and retractors.
  • Assist in wound closure and the application of dressings post-surgery.
  • Provide advanced assistance, including tissue mobilization and patient positioning.
  • Document patient data accurately according to established methods.
  • Participate in the perioperative assessment and planning for patient care.
  • Engage in continuous learning and maintain competencies as required by the nursing department.
Qualifications:
  • Graduation from an accredited nursing program; a Master's or Bachelor's degree in Nursing or Healthcare Administration is preferred.
  • Current, unrestricted RN licensure in California.
  • Completion of a structured first assisting course and proctored instruction in the operating room.
  • Certification as an Operating Room RN (CNOR) is required; CRNFA certification is preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are mandatory.

  • Demonstrate flexibility and teamwork within the surgical environment.
