Role Overview

Job Responsibilities: This position entails overseeing the engineering management of design engineering disciplines throughout all stages of project delivery. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with the Director of Capital Projects and engage with process technology, engineering, reliability experts, and procurement teams to formulate and execute design engineering strategies by utilizing external engineering contractor resources.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Ensuring overall accountability for the quality assurance of discipline engineering across all capital projects.
  • Verifying the quality of engineering deliverables in accordance with the project stage gate process.
  • Partnering with capital portfolio managers to identify design engineering needs and develop both annual and long-term engineering resource strategies.
  • Leading engineering management practices for capital engineering design and project execution, integrating diverse information sources for maximum effectiveness.
  • Establishing engineering deliverables that align with project management processes and defining strategies for engineering delivery, fostering alliances and partnerships to support capital portfolio engineering.
  • Promoting the appropriate application of engineering standards and industry best practices, encompassing not only discipline engineering but also EHSS, reliability, and sustainability.
  • Implementing value improvement initiatives and standardizing design approaches on a project basis.
  • Advocating for a design-to-construct philosophy across all projects.
  • Reviewing engineering deliverables for quality and completeness before gate reviews to ensure readiness for subsequent phases.
  • Upholding safety in project design by adhering to Goal Zero EHSS performance standards throughout execution.
  • Ensuring that design foundations meet industry and company standards, aligning with project objectives and requirements, while verifying technical accuracy to support construction, commissioning, and startup phases.
  • Assessing engineering services and materials providers in accordance with company technical and procurement standards.
  • Optimizing engineering standards to reduce project costs and implementing processes to ensure cost-effective engineering design.

Preferred Qualifications

Education: A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, or Civil Engineering from an accredited institution is required. Certification: Professional Engineering and/or Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is highly desirable.

Experience: This role necessitates over 10 years of relevant experience in engineering and project management, particularly within the chemical, petrochemical, and refining sectors, managing major projects ranging from $5 million to $100 million.

  • A results-oriented change agent capable of leveraging organizational resources to meet challenging engineering goals in a dynamic setting.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience with capital project engineering requirements across all disciplines.
  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple engineering requirements across various projects.
  • Proven experience in leading and coordinating cross-disciplinary teams on significant projects, with strong team-building and conflict resolution skills.
  • Advanced understanding of construction and maintenance methodologies, as well as technical specifications, codes, and quality control standards relevant to project engineering.
  • Extensive practical experience with the Front-End Loading (FEL) process and requisite engineering deliverables for each project phase.
  • Strong familiarity with engineering and construction contractors, as well as procurement practices, including various contracting models.
