Position Overview:

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Health Care Information Systems is in search of a Clinical Informatics Consultant. The Consultant exhibits a profound understanding of policy and clinical knowledge, sound clinical judgment, and technical proficiency with clinical information systems and workflows. They are responsible for fostering effective communication, supporting documentation policies, and pursuing ongoing professional development and competency validation. This position will provide support to various departments and staff within the University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with clinical staff to identify and prioritize critical areas for improvement using HCIS reporting tools.
  • Assist clinical personnel in translating clinical practices into electronic health information systems to enhance operational efficiencies, including the management of EHR components such as order creation, Smart Tools, and clinical decision support.
  • Utilize problem-solving techniques to recognize and address organizational and operational challenges effectively.
  • Convert clinical requirements into system designs and customized workflows, including data collection and database configurations.
  • Support content development and work alongside technical teams to customize applications.
  • Develop test data and evaluate system changes for usability and compliance with standards, confirming outcomes with clinicians and IT project managers.
  • Maintain Epic certification(s) as required.
  • Act as a liaison between clinical staff, technical teams, and vendors to resolve installation issues and facilitate effective communication.
  • Document project requirements and design decisions meticulously.
  • Provide training and support during go-live phases, including one-on-one and group demonstrations.
  • Mentor staff and students in relevant areas of expertise.
  • Communicate proficiently with both technical and non-technical personnel through various mediums.
  • Stay informed about industry trends, regulatory considerations, and best practices to apply knowledge effectively.
  • Research and recommend new functionalities for integration into clinical practices.
  • Gather and analyze user feedback to identify areas for enhancement.
  • Encourage continuous learning and professional development among staff.
  • Facilitate smooth transitions in organizational culture and practices.

Education Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in a health-related field or equivalent experience.

Required Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of clinical experience in a complex healthcare environment.

  • Proven ability to lead change in an academic healthcare setting.
  • Experience in developing training materials and conducting training sessions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in Iowa or equivalent clinical profession.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Clinical experience in an academic medical center.
  • Master's degree or progress towards one with relevant coursework.
  • Experience with Epic in clinical settings.
  • Ability to translate customer needs into system specifications.
  • Experience in assessing educational needs and implementing effective training methods.
  • Professional certification.
  • Experience providing on-call support.
