Position Overview

The Surgical Services Nurse will utilize their expertise to provide care that is informed by established practices and standards, enabling them to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate the nursing services rendered. Each nurse is accountable for the care they provide and for those under their supervision, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to ensure comprehensive patient care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Employ assessment techniques to identify patient needs, ensuring holistic care for individuals across all age groups.
  • Recognize educational needs of patients and their families, developing tailored teaching strategies to facilitate recovery.
  • Execute nursing interventions based on surgical schedules, patient evaluations, and developmental requirements, integrating these into a documented care plan.
  • Assess the effectiveness of care provided and adjust nursing actions as necessary to meet evolving patient conditions, ensuring accurate documentation.
  • Complete all required competencies for the unit and hospital as specified.
  • Perform nursing procedures in accordance with hospital policies and clinical guidelines, as verified by clinical competency checklists.
  • Maintain current CPR certification.
  • Administer medications and treatments as per physician directives, ensuring patient safety through informed practice.
  • Collaborate with healthcare team members to provide a comprehensive approach to patient care, communicating relevant changes effectively.
  • Document all aspects of patient care from admission through discharge in compliance with hospital protocols.
  • Incorporate discharge planning into daily routines to facilitate smooth transitions for patients returning home.
  • Deliver cost-effective care through efficient use of resources, including time and materials.
  • Actively engage in unit meetings and contribute to the achievement of departmental goals.
  • Foster a positive work environment that promotes staff morale and commitment to patient care.
  • Assume leadership roles as designated by the Clinical Director or their representative.
  • Participate in the mentorship of new staff and contribute to the educational development of colleagues.
  • Engage in quality improvement initiatives and data analysis to enhance patient care outcomes.
  • Participate in scheduled training sessions to maintain and enhance professional skills.

Qualifications Required

  • Associate Degree in Nursing; a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is preferred.
    • Associate Degree Nurses must enroll in a BSN program within six to nine months of hire and complete the degree within 30 months, with full tuition reimbursement available.
  • Valid RN license in Illinois.
  • Graduate from an accredited nursing program.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in trauma nursing.
  • One or more years of surgical scrub experience, particularly in cardiac procedures.
