About the Role

GATX is a leading provider of railcar leasing and maintenance services in North America, Europe, and India. We are seeking a highly skilled and safety-focused individual to join our team as a Railcar Operations Specialist.

Key Responsibilities
  • Direct locomotive operators in the movement and switching of railcars, and spot railcars inside the facility.
  • Operate diesel locomotives and direct locomotive operators in the movement and switching of railcars, and spot railcars inside the facility.
  • Obtain instructions and directions as to movement and placement of railcars on plant switching.
  • Couple and uncouple railcars, throw switches, and signal locomotive operators for the switching and spotting of railcars throughout the plant.
  • Precede railroad equipment when entering or leaving buildings, at crossings, and signal when safe to move.
  • Assist locomotive operators on maintenance of locomotives.
  • Check to see that outlet caps and dome covers are in place when tank cars are switched.
  • Comply with established safety policies, support continuing awareness for safety, and recommend specific changes and improvements to health and safety policies and programs.
Requirements
  • Ability to read and interpret documents.
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide two-digit numbers.
  • Ability to reason through and plan work details and procedures to obtain desired results.
  • Ability to read, access, and interpret switch diagrams, Excel spreadsheets, and company policies.
  • Ability to work well with others in a positive manner.
  • Knowledgeable of rail-car repairs.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Basic computer knowledge and strong communication skills.
  • Able to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Must be able to walk for extended periods of time (possibly over 8 hours per day).
  • Must be able to stoop for extended periods and routinely move from kneeling to standing positions.
  • Must be able to perform overhead work for extended periods.
  • Must be able to lift (vertically) up to 85 pounds from the ground surface.
  • Must be able to push/pull (horizontally) up to 140 pounds.
  • Must be able to climb ladders and perform work at elevated heights.
  • Must be able to work in extreme temperature environments.
