Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Utilization Review Coordinator to join our team at San Antonio Behavioral Health. As a key member of our healthcare team, you will play a critical role in ensuring the effective and efficient use of hospital services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct utilization reviews to determine the medical necessity of patient care and services.
  • Monitor patient charts and records to evaluate the appropriateness of care and treatment.
  • Review treatment plans and status of approvals from insurers to ensure compliance with hospital policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with registered nurses, case managers, and outcome managers to ensure accurate admission status and claim submission.
  • Complete short stay work-queue reviews and track results for reporting and education purposes.
  • Identify and facilitate resolution of system process problems impeding UM functions.
  • Establish and maintain efficient methods for ensuring medical necessity and appropriateness of hospital admissions.
  • Validate authorization requests and request additional data as necessary.
  • Perform concurrent reviews for patients to ensure extended stays are appropriately documented in patient records.
  • Respond to notices of potential denials and facilitate Physician to Physician appeals when appropriate.
  • Track denial information for reporting to Quarterly UR Committee.
  • Maintain liaison with Social Services department to facilitate timely discharge planning.
  • Enter complete and accurate documentation into the system describing patient-related admitting/registration activities.
  • Follow all regulatory policies and procedures, including HIPAA requirements.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 1-2 years Admitting or Financial Counseling experience preferred.
  • Basic PC skills, including Windows Operating System and Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Knowledge of governmental and managed care payer requirements.
  • Understanding of data elements required to generate a clean bill.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality under HIPAA standards.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Well-developed verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Knowledge of basic math and modern office procedures.
