Position Overview

The Equipment Maintenance Specialist is responsible for the installation, diagnosis, troubleshooting, and repair of intricate mechanical systems and distribution networks.

This role will collaborate with the Maintenance Manager to prioritize daily tasks, set work objectives, and devise solutions to recurring issues.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure prompt repairs and efficient maintenance of Pel-Freez equipment and facilities, including agricultural sites, transportation vehicles, and processing operations.
  • Utilize expertise in electrical systems, motor controls, mechanical repairs, welding, plumbing, refrigeration, HVAC, and automotive maintenance to support daily operations and equipment upkeep.
  • Conduct troubleshooting and repairs on electrical, ventilation, heating, plumbing, refrigeration, and water systems across Pel-Freez facilities.
  • Maintain and repair a diverse range of company equipment, including HVAC systems, refrigeration units, conveyor systems, onsite generators, and agricultural machinery.
  • Utilize the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to respond to work orders in a timely and professional manner.
  • Perform routine inspections and maintenance of Pel-Freez facilities and equipment.
  • Diagnose and rectify complex system failures, including electrical, refrigeration, lighting, feeding, and environmental control systems.
  • Install, modify, and repair sophisticated equipment as necessary.
  • Execute tasks within primary skill areas, including fabrication, assembly, welding, layout, and electrical work.
  • Construct and repair wooden structures as required, including the pouring of concrete pads.
  • Employ standard trade tools, inspection gauges, and electrical multimeters effectively.
  • Interpret equipment manuals, work orders, drawings, and verbal instructions to perform necessary maintenance and service.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the work area, tools, and equipment.
  • Diagnose standard maintenance issues, determine corrective actions, and verify repairs.
  • Clear debris and lubricants from parts, work areas, and equipment.
  • Operate production and shop equipment, including lathes, drill presses, grinders, and sanders.
  • Utilize forklifts, tractors, skid steers, and general agricultural equipment as needed.
  • Report safety concerns that cannot be immediately resolved to the Maintenance Manager.
Compliance and Safety

Adhere to Pel-Freez, USDA, FSIS, and OSHA policies and procedures, as well as food safety standards, general safety protocols, animal welfare guidelines, and good manufacturing practices.

This position is classified as safety-sensitive, necessitating adherence to quality standards and established safety protocols.

Qualifications
  • An associate degree in mechanical engineering technology or completion of a recognized mechanical apprenticeship program is required.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in a maintenance mechanic role within a manufacturing, laboratory, or agricultural environment is essential.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
  • HVAC, refrigeration, and/or electrical certification is preferred.
  • Ability to obtain forklift certification is required.
  • A valid driver's license and an acceptable motor vehicle driving record are necessary.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and industry regulations as mandated by OSHA, USDA, and FSIS is required.
  • Familiarity with machines and tools, including their design, use, repair, and maintenance.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and experience with agricultural and industrial equipment maintenance.
  • Ability to plan, schedule, and perform work independently and collaboratively.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and parts ordering software.
  • Ability to understand and comply with all company policies and applicable laws.
  • Mathematical skills for performing calculations necessary for job performance.
  • Physical capability to lift and transport heavy materials safely.
  • Attention to detail and ability to meet established quality standards while managing multiple priorities.

The Equipment Maintenance Specialist will also assist in overseeing the work of Helpers.
