Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit

The Pediatric Cardiac Care Physician Assistant will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team within the Pediatric Critical Care/Cardiology division to deliver exceptional care to young patients in the cardiac intensive care unit.

This role demands a high level of critical thinking and clinical proficiency in managing pediatric patients in a critical care environment.

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is accountable for the comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, treatment, management, education, consultation, and health promotion for patients and their families.

Work Schedule: 12-hour variable shifts (including nights and weekends)

Qualifications: A Master's degree or higher in nursing, along with documentation of completion of an accredited Advanced Practice Education Program. Graduate education and relevant Texas Board of Nursing authorization must align with the clinical practice area and patient demographic.

Graduates from a Master's degree or higher Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) accredited Physician Assistant program are preferred.

A minimum of one year of pediatric cardiology experience in providing medical care and postoperative experience is preferred.
New graduates with prior RN pediatric bedside experience in cardiology or ICU may be considered.
Licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse by the Texas State Board of Nursing is required, along with authorization for prescriptive authority by the Texas Board of Nursing.

Current certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) are mandatory, as per the policy for Advanced Practice Providers.

Responsibilities: Conduct and document thorough initial and ongoing physical examinations based on age and diagnosis, including psychological assessments.

Integrate data and apply evidence-based practices to develop, implement, and evaluate patient care plans, including ordering and interpreting laboratory, radiology, and other diagnostic studies/results.

Demonstrate proficiency in technical and procedural skills relevant to the specialty and training.

Provide essential management, referrals, counseling, and education to patients, families, and caregivers regarding current care and preventive health measures.

Engage in quality improvement initiatives through organized group processes, workshops, seminars, and staff meetings to enhance clinical and system performance.

Collaborate on research projects and protocols; identify opportunities and propose suggestions for improvements in departmental policies, procedures, and protocols.

The incumbent may encounter body fluids and infectious diseases.
