Job Summary:
City Of Columbia is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Sanitation Equipment Operator to join our team. As a Sanitation Equipment Operator, you will be responsible for operating light to heavy construction equipment, performing routine to semi-skilled manual tasks, and ensuring the safe and efficient operation of sanitation equipment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate and maintain sanitation equipment, including garbage trucks, knuckle booms, commercial trucks, front loaders, curb and rear loaders, brush trucks, and dump trucks.
- Load and unload material at the landfill.
- Use supporting hand tools, including rakes, pitchforks, chainsaws, and other equipment.
- May pick up and carry sanitation waste, recycled goods, yard waste, bagged leaves, grass, limbs, and bundles of limbs.
- May pick up bulk items.
- Perform cleaning and greasing of sanitation trucks, checking tires, brakes, fluids, oil, head and tail lights, windows, and mirrors, and report any unsafe conditions to the supervisor.
- Perform all duties of a Sanitation Worker.
- Attend to traffic conditions, motorists, pedestrians, weather, overhead power lines, and coworkers to complete routes in the safest and most expeditious manner.
- Direct traffic and flag motorists.
- Fill out forms and daily paperwork with completeness and accuracy.
- Complete timecards and maintain reports of duties performed.
- Perform other tasks as assigned.
- Display courteous, civil, and respectful behavior to all persons and make every effort to meet the needs of citizens requesting assistance.
- Refrain from the use of abusive, indecent, or profane language or gestures in the workplace, in the performance of duties, or in the presence of a member of the public.
- Perform duties in a manner that is fair, impartial, and without prejudice toward any person or group.
- Refrain from arguing unnecessarily with any person or otherwise showing a lack of self-control, ridicule, or defame any employee, elected official, or any other person or any agency of the City Of Columbia.
- Display responsibility for attendance and promptness and report to the work area on time.
Secondary Responsibilities:
Operate additional equipment, including mowers, graders, and skid steer loaders.
Requirements:
- Valid Driver License, Class B -OR MUST OBTAIN PERMIT WITHIN 3 MONTHS OF HIRE DATE AND OBTAIN CLASS B CDL WITHIN 6 MONTHS OF HIRE.
Preferred Qualifications:
- High school education or G.E.D.
- Six months of sanitation operations experience which may be substituted for one year of maintenance work or equipment operation.

The employee must regularly required to lift and/or move, push or pull up to 25 pounds and occasionally required to lift and/or move, push or pull up to 50 pounds without assistance and up to 100 pounds or more with assistance.
