Job SummaryOperate light to heavy construction equipment and perform routine to semi-skilled manual tasks. Key responsibilities include driving and maintaining sanitation equipment, loading and unloading material at the landfill, and using supporting hand tools. May pick up and carry sanitation waste, recycled goods, and yard waste. Performs cleaning and greasing of sanitation trucks, checks tires, brakes, fluids, oil, head and tail lights, windows, and mirrors, and reports any unsafe conditions to the supervisor. Attends to traffic conditions, motorists, pedestrians, weather, overhead power lines, and coworkers to complete the route in the safest and most expeditious manner. Directs traffic and flags motorists. Fills out forms and daily paperwork with completeness and accuracy. Completes timecards and maintains reports of duties performed. Performs other tasks as assigned. Displays courteous, civil, and respectful behavior to all persons and makes every effort to meet the needs of citizens requesting assistance. Refrains from using abusive, indecent, or profane language or gestures in the workplace, in the performance of duties, or in the presence of a member of the public. Performs duties in a manner that is fair, impartial, and without prejudice toward any person or group. Refrains from arguing unnecessarily with any person or otherwise showing a lack of self-control, ridicule, or defame any employee, elected official, or any other person or any agency of the City of Columbia. Displays responsibility for attendance and promptness and reports to the work area on time.Operates additional equipment, mowers, graders, skid steer loaders. Supervisory Functions: None. Requirements: Knowledge, Skills: Knowledge of city street locations, traffic laws, traffic awareness, safe operating procedures, vehicle and equipment repairs, hazards and applicable safety rules and regulations involved in operating refuse trucks, traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in a truck operation, and City streets and alleys. Skill in the safe and efficient operation of assigned equipment and the observance of traffic laws and regulations. Ability: Ability to read maps and understand collection routes, add, subtract, speak clearly, write clearly, read and interpret written information, follow instructions, respond to management direction, complete tasks on time or notify appropriate person with an alternate plan, and meet scheduling and attendance requirements. Certifications, Licenses, Registrations: Valid Driver License, Class B -OR MUST OBTAIN PERMIT WITHIN 3 MONTHS OF HIRE DATE AND OBTAIN CLASS B CDL WITHIN 6 MONTHS OF HIRE. Preferred Education: High school education or G.E.D.; six months of sanitation operations experience which may be substituted for one year of maintenance work or equipment operation.
