Position Overview
The Senior EHS&S Specialist plays a crucial role in supporting the comprehensive operations of BioMarin's Environment, Health, Safety, and Sustainability (EHS&S) initiatives, emphasizing adherence to environmental compliance standards across various business sectors.
This role reports directly to a Senior Manager and is responsible for executing environmental, health, and safety programs and protocols while serving as the EHS&S representative on diverse cross-functional projects.
At the discretion of the EHS&S manager, this position may also assist with additional safety, health, and environmental services, including:
- Incident management
- Thorough risk assessments and Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs)
- Stakeholder engagement
- Other departmental initiatives.
The incumbent will effectively communicate across all organizational levels and positively influence both personnel and processes.
Key Responsibilities- Provide direct support to the EHS&S Senior Manager, including identifying and addressing compliance deficiencies.
- Develop and implement environmental compliance policies, procedures, training, and documentation.
- Offer strategic guidance to stakeholders to mitigate environmental compliance risks.
- Review new or proposed modifications to site facilities, equipment, materials, or operations to ensure all necessary EHS&S requirements are met.
- Coordinate and conduct safety audits and inspections.
- Assist in training and program development.
- Support the INTELEX incident management system.
- Cultivate and maintain robust relationships with internal and external partners and stakeholders.
- Utilize Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required.
- Effectively use EHS&S and company software systems.
- Perform additional tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
Environmental Compliance Subject Matter Expert
- Act as a subject matter expert for air, water, and waste compliance programs, including but not limited to Hazardous Waste, Medical Waste, Industrial Wastewater, and Stormwater.
- Serve as the document owner for the environmental management program.
- Review, update, and/or develop EHS&S policies and procedures.
- Establish, update, and manage programs to comply with state and local regulations.
- Conduct compliance audits and inspections.
- Recommend and collaborate with stakeholders to implement solutions and best practices.
- Work directly with internal partners and stakeholders as well as external consultants, contractors, vendors, and regulatory personnel.
Experience Requirements
Required Skills
- 8-10 years of relevant experience with a bachelor's degree in Engineering, Environmental Management, or a related field.
- Proven experience managing EHS programs and delivering EHS services.
- In-depth knowledge of EHS regulations, procedures, and business practices.
- Subject matter expertise and demonstrated understanding of regulatory requirements.
- Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams.
- Proven ability to influence site management, customers, and stakeholders to enhance environmental culture.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong public speaking abilities for stakeholder meetings and training sessions.
Desired Skills
- Previous experience with California regulatory agencies and regulations.
- Experience in a biopharmaceutical environment.
- Background in managing environmental programs at industrial or research facilities.

Qualification Guidelines
- A bachelor's degree (or equivalent) is required.
- Professional certifications such as CHMM, CEM, CBSP, etc. are desirable.
