Job Summary:

The State of Kansas is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Attorney to join our Workers' Compensation Division. As a Staff Attorney, you will play a critical role in ensuring the fair and efficient administration of workers' compensation laws and regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct in-depth research on workers' compensation laws, regulations, and precedents to provide expert advice and guidance to stakeholders.
  • Assist in drafting and reviewing legal documents, including briefs, memoranda, and opinions, to ensure compliance with state and federal laws.
  • Collaborate with the Director and Assistant Director to respond to public and legislative requests, advise on the law, and work on the medical fee schedule.
  • Assist the records section with the retention of records and provide guidance on the Kansas Open Records Act (KORA).
  • Support the Self-Insured Employers group with the evaluation of applications to be self-insured and ensure compliance with security requirements.

Progression Milestones:

  • Complete training on the Division's electronic filing system (OSCAR) to ensure efficient and accurate processing of cases.
  • Attend relevant seminars, workshops, and CLE courses to enhance knowledge and stay up-to-date on the latest developments in workers' compensation law.
  • Complete on-the-job training with the self-insured and records programs to gain a deeper understanding of the Division's operations.

Minimum Requirements:

  • A Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active licensure in the State of Kansas.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Experience working in state government and/or workers' compensation law is highly desirable.

  • State of Kansas Tax Clearance Certificate: The successful applicant must obtain a valid Kansas Certificate of Tax Clearance by accessing the Kansas Department of Revenue's website within 10 days of the date the applicant has been offered the employment position.
