Role Summary
The Social Science Teacher Preparation Program within the Department of History provides upper-division undergraduate courses aimed at aspiring K-12 educators. These courses equip students with essential content knowledge and pedagogical strategies tailored for California public school classrooms. The History Department collaborates with the College of Education to oversee applications, course offerings, and student teaching supervision for graduates pursuing a single subject teaching credential in Social Science.
Key Responsibilities
The California State University’s History Department seeks qualified and driven candidates for the position of
Subject Area Coordinator for Social Science. The responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Evaluating subject matter competency and providing constructive feedback to applicants.
- Conducting interviews and offering initial advising for all applicants to the credential program.
- Collaborating with the Field Placement Coordinator to assess potential mentor teachers and facilitate placements for teacher candidates.
- Working with the History Department and College of Education Field Office to organize supervision loads.
- Addressing any issues that arise for teacher candidates, supervisors, and mentor teachers, and developing improvement plans as necessary.
- Participating in monthly meetings of the Single Subject Credential Program, including preparation and presentation of relevant tasks.
- Collaborating with the College of Education Program Advisor to create and implement new policies, procedures, and assessments related to methods coursework and supervision.
- Recruiting and managing instructors for supervision and seminar courses, including monitoring workload and evaluations.
- Meeting regularly with supervisors to align on supervision duties and professional development.
- Staying informed on trends and issues relevant to the subject area and credential program.
- Teaching a weekly/bi-weekly Student Teaching Seminar for Phase 2 candidates.
- Demonstrating awareness of and addressing the diverse needs of students through inclusive materials and teaching strategies.
- Organizing all classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
- Ensuring all classes meet as scheduled throughout the semester in the assigned mode.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in History, Education (Social Science emphasis), or a related field.
- A minimum of five years of teaching experience in History/Social Science in California, grades 4-12.
- Evidence of a teaching philosophy that incorporates contemporary pedagogical strategies focused on anti-racist and culturally relevant teaching.
- Experience with the Canvas learning management system is essential.
- Ability to teach and assess adult learners, demonstrating satisfactory academic achievement.
- Awareness and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population.
Preferred Qualifications
- Doctorate in History or Education (Social Science emphasis).
- Experience teaching at the post-secondary level (community college, four-year college, or university).
Compensation
Compensation and salary range are determined based on qualifications and experience. Anticipated starting salary ranges are as follows:
- L-A / Range 2 - $4530 - $5405
- L-B / Range 3 - $5405 - $6786
- L-C / Range 4 - $6190 - $8554
- L-D / Range 5 - $7794 - $9385
Note: These figures represent the anticipated monthly salary rate for full-time academic year faculty, with part-time rates prorated.
