Social Science Teacher Preparation Program

The Social Science Teacher Preparation Program within the Department of History provides upper-division undergraduate courses aimed at aspiring K-12 educators. Key Responsibilities

The History Department at The California State University is seeking highly qualified and motivated candidates for the position of Subject Area Coordinator for Social Science. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Evaluating subject matter competency, providing constructive feedback for improvement, and reassessing competency of all applicants to the program.
  • Conducting interviews and offering initial credential program guidance to all subject-area applicants.
  • Collaborating with the Field Placement Coordinator in the College of Education to assess potential mentor teachers, facilitate placements for teacher candidates, and monitor their development.
  • Working alongside the History Department and College of Education Field Office to organize supervision loads.
  • Addressing any challenges that arise for teacher candidates, supervisors, and/or mentor teachers in the field, and if necessary, creating improvement or remediation plans.
  • Participating in monthly meetings of the Single Subject Credential Program, including preparation and presentation of relevant tasks.
  • Partnering with the College of Education Program Advisor and TED Chair to formulate and implement new policies, procedures, curricula, and assessments, particularly concerning methods coursework and supervision of teacher candidates.
  • Recruiting, hiring, and retaining instructors for supervision, seminar/colloquium, and methods courses. Managing supervisors, including workload assignments, monitoring performance, and writing evaluations.
  • Regularly meeting with supervisors to align on supervision responsibilities, including preparation for assessments and providing professional development.
  • Staying informed on trends and issues pertinent to the subject area and credential program.
  • Teaching a weekly/bi-weekly Student Teaching Seminar class for Phase 2 candidates.
  • Demonstrating awareness of and addressing the needs of a diverse student population through inclusive course materials and teaching strategies.
  • Organizing all classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Ensuring all classes are conducted as scheduled throughout the semester or term, in the assigned mode (e.g., asynchronous, synchronous, in-person, or hybrid).

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in History, Education (Social Science emphasis), or Teaching (Social Science emphasis).
  • A minimum of five years of teaching experience in History/Social Science in California, grades 4-12.
  • Demonstrated teaching philosophy that incorporates contemporary history education pedagogical strategies focused on anti-racist, anti-oppressive, and culturally relevant teaching.
  • Experience with the Canvas learning management system is essential.
  • Ability to teach and assess adult learners, with evidence of satisfactory academic achievement.
  • Awareness and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population, gained through cross-cultural study, training, teaching, or comparable experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctorate in History or Education (Social Science emphasis).
  • Teaching experience at the post-secondary level (community college, four-year college, or university).

Compensation

Compensation and salary range are determined based on qualifications and experience. Anticipated starting salary ranges from $4,530 to $9,385 monthly, depending on the specific range placement.
