SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

The Early Childhood Education Specialist is tasked with overseeing the nurturing and instructional development of a designated group of young learners as part of a collaborative teaching team.

This role involves assisting in the design and execution of the educational curriculum.



KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:


Ensures a Safe and Nurturing Environment

Maintain an organized learning space.

Encourage healthy eating habits by dining alongside children.

Adhere to proper dental hygiene practices as per regulations.

Display essential health and safety information prominently.

Share routine responsibilities with fellow staff (supervision during outdoor play, assistance with personal care, tidying up, classroom upkeep).

Contribute to maintaining cleanliness in the classroom and surrounding areas.

Engage with children during supervised activities.

Conduct daily health assessments of children.

Perform monthly safety inspections of the classroom and playground, reporting any issues to the Curriculum Specialist/Instructional Lead Teacher.

Implement proper handwashing and sanitization protocols.

Exhibits Physical & Cognitive Proficiency

Strike a balance between child-initiated and teacher-led activities.

Utilize resources to foster physical growth.

Provide a mix of quiet and active learning experiences.

Involve children in the planning and execution of activities.

Deliver a comprehensive curriculum tailored to the individual needs of each child.

Design and implement activities that enhance numerical understanding.

Facilitate experiences that support language and literacy growth.

Incorporate outdoor learning as part of the educational experience.

Continuously evaluate children's developmental needs and progress.

Maintain weekly written plans.

Utilize assessment outcomes to inform activity planning based on developmental levels.

Prepare materials in advance to ensure readiness for planned activities.

Share insights on children's developmental milestones by creating age-appropriate activities.

Encourages Social and Emotional Growth and Provides Constructive Guidance

Design and implement engaging activities that foster self-esteem.

Facilitate hands-on experiences that enhance social skills.

Incorporate culturally diverse activities.

Advocate for positive guidance strategies.

Offer a variety of creative and expressive activities.

Establish routines that allow for smooth transitions.

Encourage independence in decision-making and self-care (dressing, personal hygiene, etc.).

Welcome children warmly upon arrival and departure.

Provide each child with daily affection and attention.

Motivate children to explore problem-solving and discovery.


Assist children in expressing their feelings (anger, sadness, fear, etc.) and encourage open dialogue about their emotions.

Must be prepared to work with children with special needs and their families.

Builds Positive and Productive Relationships with Families

Welcome parents and visitors with warmth and friendliness.

Allocate time to explain classroom activities and projects to parents.

Communicate daily with parents regarding their child's activities through verbal and/or written updates.

Share assessment insights with parents and provide support for navigating various developmental stages.

Plan and conduct home and/or personal visits.

Encourage communication with parents through progress notes, monthly newsletters, and parent-teacher conferences.

Offer diverse opportunities for family involvement in the program.

Encourage parental participation in the educational process.

Demonstrates a Commitment to Professionalism

Participate in staff and parent leadership meetings.

Engage in conferences and in-service training.

Apply knowledge gained from professional development opportunities.

Share innovative ideas and techniques with colleagues.

Support the center's philosophy and educational goals.

Notify the Center Director prior to any planned absences.

Maintain a reliable attendance record.

Adhere to scheduled work hours.

Follow center policies regarding breaks, communication, and timekeeping.

Exhibit proficiency in required job skills and knowledge.

Demonstrate the ability to learn and apply new skills effectively.

Stay informed about developments in the field of Early Childhood Education.

Work with minimal supervision.

Utilize resources efficiently and effectively.

Understand and comply with State Licensing Regulations.

Familiarize oneself with NAEYC standards.

Comprehend Head Start Performance Standards.

Collaborate with the Curriculum Specialist/Instructional Lead Teacher to ensure adequate classroom materials are available.

Ensure that children's developmental assessments are completed and used for ongoing planning.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES,

AND SKILLS:


The candidate must possess comprehensive knowledge in the following areas: child development and early education theories and practices, safe and suitable activities for children, relevant legislation, policies, and procedures to ensure the supervision and safety of children at all times, and an understanding of the cultural environment within early education and family centers.


Must demonstrate the following skills:

team-building skills, supervisory capabilities, analytical and problem-solving abilities, decision-making skills, effective verbal and listening communication skills, stress management techniques, time management skills, and teaching competencies.

Confidentiality must be maintained in all aspects of the Day Care Worker role.

Additionally, the candidate should exhibit the following personal attributes: respectfulness, cultural awareness and sensitivity, flexibility, strong work ethics, consistency and fairness, compassion and understanding, and the ability to foster self-esteem while ensuring a safe and secure environment.

EDUCATION, TRAINING,

AND EXPERIENCE:


BA or BS:
Early Childhood Education or a closely related field preferred.

OR

MA or MS:
Early Childhood Education or a closely related field preferred.



PHYSICAL DEMANDS:


The Specialist may be required to lift and carry children and educational materials. The Specialist will occasionally spend time sitting on the floor or using child-sized furniture. The Specialist will be responsible for cleaning and maintaining equipment and facilities and moving throughout the community with children.

The Specialist may encounter children who are ill and/or contagious and must take necessary precautions to ensure the health and safety of all children, parents, staff, and themselves.


The Specialist will work in a dynamic and occasionally noisy environment where multiple activities and situations may occur simultaneously.


Performing General Physical Activities - The Specialist will be expected to engage in physical activities that require considerable use of their arms and legs and full-body movement, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling materials.



SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:


A background check and fingerprinting are mandatory prior to the hire date. Caring for children can be demanding.

The Specialist must ensure that children are supervised at all times and that they are engaged in safe and appropriate activities.

Given the nature of the role, the Specialist must be prepared to manage accidents and emergencies as they arise.



EVALUATION:


Performance in this role will be assessed in accordance with Sheltering Arms evaluation policies.

COMPENSATION: The compensation for this position is aligned with experience in the Early Childhood Education field and educational qualifications.
