Transmission Line Maintenance Engineer

Location: Southern Company

Reporting Structure: Reports to the TMC Supervisor

POSITION SUMMARY

This role is essential for overseeing the transmission line maintenance operations within the designated area. The incumbent will be responsible for managing the line maintenance program, ensuring the preparation and closure of capital and maintenance work orders, and coordinating material requirements. This position also involves supervising maintenance and inspection initiatives, entering and reviewing operational data, and collaborating with various departments. Key responsibilities include patrolling transmission lines, coordinating repairs, and providing technical guidance to the TMC Line and Contract crews.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Direct the daily operations of the Lines team and support Transmission Line Maintenance crews.
  • Develop and manage the TMC Lines Maintenance work plan.
  • Ensure compliance with Georgia Power Company specifications and standards for all transmission line work.
  • Aim for zero operational incidents while achieving annual SAIDI and SAIFI targets.
  • Monitor and manage the operational and capital budgets on a monthly basis.
  • Assist TMC crews with complex clearance requests and support hot stick operations as necessary.
  • Facilitate access requirements for jobs and procure specialized equipment when needed.
  • Ensure accurate documentation of transmission line data, including STOMP data.
  • Review aerial inspection reports and initiate necessary actions.
  • Investigate outages and operations to determine root causes, utilizing both foot and aerial patrols.
  • Complete all required documentation in a timely manner.
  • Engage with external requestors directly.
  • Participate in the on-call rotation for TMC Line Maintenance.
  • Conduct routine inspections and repairs of transmission line switches.
  • Support capital projects by participating in planning and pre-construction meetings.
  • Coordinate installation of transmission line switches.
  • Collaborate with Line Engineering to analyze existing line and right-of-way conditions.
  • Work with Transmission Support to address technical line issues and best practices.
  • Monitor construction progress and assist in final line inspections.
  • Oversee contract crews to ensure compliance with GPC standards.
  • Verify and track invoices from contract crews.
  • Provide monthly estimates to the Comptroller.
  • Develop proficiency in the installation and maintenance of transmission line switches and motor operators.
  • Promote a culture of safety excellence and ensure a safe working environment.
  • Collaborate with storm teams post-major weather events, which may involve travel.
  • Build relationships with other teams within Power Delivery and External Affairs.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
  • B.S. Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology (Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil preferred).
Experience:
  • Experience in Transmission Line Maintenance and/or Design is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Transmission Line Construction and Operations is advantageous.
  • Experience in Distribution is a plus.
  • Ability to respond effectively to trouble or outage restoration situations.
  • Some overnight travel may be required.
SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of transmission line maintenance methods and specifications.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to interpret civil and construction drawings, including AutoCAD files.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the capacity to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with PLS CADD, TEAMS, STOMP, TLMS.
