About the Job

As a Histology Technician with NursingPro Staffing, you will assist anatomic pathologists in performing gross dissection of surgical specimens and biopsies. Your daily activities will involve accessioning, grossing, and routine processing of tissues received from surgical procedures. You will work closely with pathologists and departmental supervisors to develop and maintain grossing procedures.

Responsibilities

• Ensure proper accessioning and labeling of tissue samples.
• Process paperwork associated with accessioning and reporting.
• Prepare reagents for tissue processing and routine slide staining.
• Perform gross evaluation of biopsy and surgical specimens, followed by the appropriate dissections and description of findings.
• Maintain quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.
• Keep work areas physically clean, organized, and free of safety hazards.
• Properly dispose of all bio-hazardous materials and chemically hazardous materials and prepare solutions and reagents in accordance with standard procedures.

Requirements

• Associates degree in Chemistry, Biology, or completion of an accredited program in Histotechnology AND one year of histology experience.
• OR Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Biomedical Science, Biology, or Chemistry.
• National Certification as a HT/HLT (ASCP) required.
• Thorough knowledge of histology methods and correlation to disease processes.
• Ability to follow protocols for the proper fixation and routine staining of samples.
• Ability to consistently prepare and produce specimen sections with appropriate slide orientation, thickness, and stain quality for microscopic diagnosis by a pathologist.
• Demonstrates good technique in the cutting, embedding, orientation, and staining of specimens.
• General knowledge of laboratory accreditation and regulatory compliance requirements.
• Excellent communication, teamwork, and organizational skills. Sets a positive example.
• Ability to train others.
• Effective and proactive problem-solving and decision-making skills.
