Job Summary

Duke University is seeking a skilled Respiratory Therapist to join our team. As a Respiratory Therapist, you will be responsible for performing diagnostic and therapeutic clinical procedures, evaluating patient data, and collaborating with healthcare teams to provide high-quality patient care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform and evaluate diagnostic and therapeutic clinical procedures as defined in the Respiratory Care Services scope of clinical practice.
  • Evaluate appropriateness of medical orders and proficiently apply mechanical ventilator modalities.
  • Administer medical gases, insert nasogastric and orogastric tubes, and perform tracheotomy tube changes and capnography monitoring.
  • Transport patients requiring mechanical ventilation or airway protection and interpret clinical data to optimize patient clinical objectives.
  • Participate in clinical rounds with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers and assist with Bronchoscopy and orientation and training of Level II RT.

Requirements

  • Completion of a 2-year AMA-approved respiratory care program (Associates Degree or the equivalent).
  • North Carolina State Licensure or North Carolina State Provisional License, Certification by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), and any other applicable certifications applicable to the institution.

Work Environment

Work involves contact with patients of all ages, family members, physicians, nursing, and all other members of the healthcare team. Work is performed in all areas of the hospital. Work may require lifting or pushing in excess of 30 pounds, carrying emergency airway bags, and walking, running, climbing, and bending.
