Dayton T. Brown, Inc. is a leader in the fields of Technical Publications, Logistics, Engineering & Test, and Military Mission Systems. We are seeking a Full-Time Technical Illustration Group Manager to enhance our talented team within the Technical Services Division.


This role entails overseeing a team of illustrators who provide critical illustration support for our customer programs. Key responsibilities include:

  • Planning and coordinating tasks with program managers across the division, ensuring that both planned and actual work are tracked, risks are addressed, and financial limitations are adhered to.
  • Assessing and delegating illustration tasks to team members and leaders.
  • Utilizing company content management and status tracking tools to forecast work, identify current status, monitor progress, and gather quality metrics.
  • Ensuring that all produced illustrations meet or surpass specification requirements and adhere to the quality standards set by Dayton T. Brown.
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with customers, which involves participating in virtual and/or in-person meetings to discuss status updates, risks, added value, and action plans.
  • Developing evaluation methods to assess program strengths and pinpoint areas for enhancement.
  • Assisting with technical proposals in response to RFPs, specifically regarding illustration and software solutions.
  • Supervising, coaching, mentoring, and further developing a team of technical illustrators.
  • Applying project management principles to measure both program and individual job performance.
  • Staying informed about the latest industry trends, technologies, and future developments in illustration.
  • Testing and evaluating new software and tools, providing insights to program managers, and making recommendations to upper management.
  • Exhibiting strong oral and written communication, analytical, and critical thinking skills.
  • Demonstrating a solid understanding of business management and financial principles.
  • Effectively working under pressure and meeting tight deadlines.

The ideal candidate will possess proven experience as an Illustrations Manager in a technical publication setting. Additional qualifications include:

  • A 2 or 4-year degree in Illustration, Graphic Design, Mechanical Design, or a related field.
  • Over 10 years of experience in developing technical illustrations for commercial or military programs.
  • A minimum of 5 years in a management capacity.
  • Experience in creating technical publication proposals and understanding the impact of illustrations on cost and scheduling.
  • Expertise in developing technical illustration processes and style guides for technical manuals and training materials.
  • Thorough knowledge of technical illustration standards such as S1000D, MIL-STD-3031, MIL-STD-40051, MIL-STD_38784, ATA 100, and iSpec 2200.
  • Strong technical knowledge in creating 2D and 3D illustrations using software like Technical Illustrator, IsoDraw, AutoCAD, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Creo-Illustrate, Blender, and 3DS Max.
  • In-depth understanding of vector illustration development and 3D formats such as CGM, ISO, SVG, GLTF, and GLB.
  • Proficiency in all Microsoft Office applications; PMP Certification is a plus.
  • Willingness to travel as necessary.
  • Ability to obtain a DoD SECRET clearance if required.
