A Message from the Clinical Pastoral Education Program

As a Chaplain Resident at Atrium Health, you will have the opportunity to develop your spiritual care skills under the supervision of a CPE Supervisor. Your primary responsibility will be to provide direct Spiritual Care services to patients, families, and staff across various nursing clinical areas. In addition to this critical role, you will also participate in education and ensure compliance with the Standards set forth by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform daily spiritual care visitation to patients, families, and staff.
  • Respond promptly to referrals from clinical nursing areas, ensuring timely follow-up and appropriate support.
  • Provide culturally sensitive Spiritual Care and support to individuals from diverse backgrounds, upholding the principles of non-proselytization.
  • Collaborate with faith group leaders to provide support to members who are patients.
  • Facilitate Spiritual Care Groups in collaboration with the Healthcare Team.
  • Maintain accurate records of spiritual care activities and interactions.
  • Nurture relationships with endorsing denominations, engaging in necessary activities to maintain endorsement.
  • Regularly attend supervisory meetings with the CPE Supervisor, reporting professional activities and growth.

To succeed in this role, you must be able to:

  • Maintain mobility, including walking, standing, and sitting.
  • Engage in effective communication with patients, families, and teammates through clear verbal and written expression.
  • Read and speak English in simple, understandable terms.
  • Be free from physical limitations that would impede fulfillment of spiritual care duties.
Education, Experience, and Certifications

We seek candidates with a Master's of Divinity or equivalent degree, as well as prior experience in Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE). Preference will be given to those with a previous unit of CPE completed at an accredited ACPE center.
