Role Overview: The Experiential Therapist is responsible for the development, planning, implementation, facilitation, direction, and evaluation of experiential therapy programs across various specialized treatment areas. This position requires the application of knowledge and experience in an educational capacity with interdisciplinary teams and community resources. Documentation is to be maintained within the designated program. The Experiential Therapist I should possess a comprehensive understanding of the psychosocial functioning of patient/resident groups and the application of expressive activities in a psychiatric environment. Activities may include adventure-based and environmental initiatives, sports, dance, group challenges, arts and crafts, music, outdoor experiences, psychodrama, horticulture, and ropes/challenge courses.

  • Adhere to all organizational policies and procedures, including those related to Infection Control, Safety, Employee Health, Human Resources, and Experiential Therapy.
  • Assist in training new staff as directed.

Participation in Improvement Systems:

  • Gain an understanding of the Rogers Improvement System (ROS) process.
  • Apply the ROS model to departmental functions.
  • Identify concerns related to the ROS throughout the system.

Programming Duties:

  • Conduct experiential therapy sessions as scheduled.
  • Evaluate, plan, and coordinate programming to address the needs of patients/residents.
  • Ensure safety and availability of supplies in the Experiential Therapy environments.
  • Remain adaptable to changes in work assignments, including schedule adjustments and program additions.
  • Possess a solid understanding of various experiential therapies.

Documentation and Treatment:

  • Complete treatment plans and evaluations in accordance with organizational policies.
  • Maintain therapeutic documentation as per established guidelines.

Patient/Resident Interaction:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of intervention strategies and utilize redirection to ensure safety.
  • Monitor patient/resident behavior and intervene appropriately using de-escalation techniques.
  • Establish therapeutic rapport while maintaining professional boundaries.
  • Understand the psychosocial functioning of patient/resident groups and their behavioral relationships to common diagnostic categories.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of treatment procedures and models applicable within a therapy setting.

Staff Requirements:

  • Attend all mandatory training sessions relevant to the position.
  • Complete all required orientation competencies and training within the department.
  • Participate in departmental meetings as required.
  • Meet regularly with the manager for clinical guidance and program evaluation.
  • Conduct program-specific activities off-site, following all necessary procedures.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Educational and Training Requirements:

  • A BS/BA degree is required, preferably in art, music, dance, recreation, or related therapies; a Master's degree is preferred.
  • Certification through the appropriate credentialing board is preferred.
  • A valid driver's license is required for specific assignments.
  • CPR certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross is required within the first month of employment.
  • Formal training in managing aggressive patients is required within the first two months of employment.
  • Ropes and Challenge Course training is required, with annual renewal as applicable.
  • Experience or licensure is required for those working with children with mental health disorders.
  • Compliance with training requirements for Residential Care Centers and Community-Based Residential Facilities is necessary.
