Advanced Lab Specialist in Molecular Genetics

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a qualified candidate for the role of Senior Lab Specialist within the Division of Hematology and Oncology. This position involves providing scientific and technical assistance for laboratory research focused on molecular genetics, particularly in the areas of DNA repair, DNA recombination, and CRISPR-mediated gene editing.
Key Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Manage an independent research project.
- Support colleagues in experiments related to cell culture, Western blotting, DNA and RNA isolation, PCR, and CRISPR editing.
- Train new laboratory personnel in scientific techniques.
- Collaborate with senior scientists to create methodologies and protocols for ongoing projects.
- Assist in data collection and entry using electronic systems.
- Procure laboratory supplies as needed.
- Conduct routine laboratory maintenance and ensure operational efficiency.
- Perform data analysis and laboratory procedures as required.
- Oversee laboratory management tasks, including reagent distribution and safety compliance.
- Undertake additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree required.
- Experience: A minimum of 9 years in a laboratory technician role is required. A Master's or Terminal degree may substitute for 4 years of experience, with a total of 12 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of a degree.
- A Master's degree in molecular biology or a closely related scientific field is preferred.
Required Skills and Abilities:
- Strong problem-solving skills with meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to organize and analyze work processes; plan and execute experiments; interpret and report findings effectively.
- Capability to conduct laboratory experiments independently.
- Proficient in data collection and sample handling.
- Understanding of laboratory processes and protocols.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Experience mentoring junior lab staff.
Physical Requirements:
This role may require extended periods of standing and performing tasks that involve fine motor skills and keyboarding.
