Job Title: Lab Specialist Intermediate/Senior or Lab Manager

The Department of Pharmacology at the University of Virginia seeks a highly skilled and experienced Lab Specialist Intermediate/Senior or Lab Manager to lead cutting-edge research in neuroscience within the Laboratory of Dr. Julius Zhu.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide advanced technical support for research projects, including molecular cloning, cell culture, and animal handling.
  • Engage in scientific experimentation and undertake administrative responsibilities essential for the efficient functioning of the Zhu Lab.
  • Supervise multiple lab members and oversee complex laboratory activities.
  • Ensure compliance with established practices and operational standards.
  • Train lab members and enforce adherence to laboratory protocols.
  • Manage and coordinate research projects within the lab.
  • Provide advice on technical procedures and equipment.
  • Represent the lab in interactions with university committees.
Requirements:
  • Lab Specialist Intermediate:
    • Bachelor's degree.
    • 6 years of experience in a lab technician role. Master's degree may substitute for required experience. 9 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.
  • Lab Specialist Senior:
    • Bachelor's degree.
    • 9 years of experience in a lab technician role. May substitute with Master's or Terminal degree plus 4 years of experience in a lab technician role and supervisory experience. 12 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.
  • Lab Manager:
    • Master's degree. Bachelor's degree accepted with additional experience.
    • Master's degree: 4 years of experience in lab technical and supervisory role. Bachelor's Degree: 6 years of experience in lab technical and/or supervisory role.
    • Licensure: Medical Laboratory Technician certification preferred. Certain areas may require certification to be obtained through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Bachelor's, Master's, PhD degree in a relevant field (e.g., neuroscience, biology, pharmacology).
    • Proven experience in molecular biology techniques, cell culture, and animal handling.
    • Experience with behavioral tasks, stereotaxic surgeries, and immunohistology preferred.
    • Strong organizational and managerial skills.
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced research environment.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Prior experience in laboratory management or supervision is desirable.
    Physical Demands:

This position requires extensive periods of standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Keyboarding and other bench work are also required, as well as finer finger manipulation for animal procedures.

A competitive salary will be offered commensurate with the candidate's experience. This is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding, and performance.
