Position Overview

The City of New York's Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is dedicated to enhancing the environment and safeguarding public health for all residents. As the largest municipal water and wastewater utility in the United States, DEP manages a vast water supply system that includes numerous reservoirs and controlled lakes.

Departmental Focus

The Bureau of Engineering Design & Construction (BEDC) oversees a significant portfolio of capital projects, ensuring the continued operation and maintenance of a high-quality water supply system. The In-House Design (IHD) Directorate within BEDC comprises two specialized units: the core IHD unit, which includes various engineering sections such as Architectural, Civil, Structural, and Mechanical, and the Engineering Services unit, which focuses on quality assurance and sustainability.

Role Responsibilities

The Civil Section of IHD is responsible for creating sustainable civil engineering designs for capital improvement projects. This includes preparing comprehensive civil engineering documents for the construction and maintenance of public infrastructure. Key responsibilities involve:

  • Developing plans and specifications for site development, including grading, drainage, and stormwater management.
  • Coordinating with various engineering disciplines throughout the design process.
  • Providing engineering design services during the construction phase.

Internship Opportunity

BEDC is seeking to recruit several Civil Engineering Interns to assist the Site Civil and Structural sections. Under the guidance of a Lead Design Engineer, interns will contribute to the design and construction phases of capital projects by preparing essential engineering documents, including drawings and specifications for complex water supply and wastewater facilities. Responsibilities may also encompass:

  • Conducting field investigations and visits.
  • Reviewing technical documents and responding to inquiries.
  • Assisting in project scheduling and coordination with stakeholders.

Qualifications

Applicants must possess a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from an accredited institution. Degrees in other engineering disciplines or civil engineering technology are not acceptable.
