Job Overview:

Under the guidance of the Public Health Informatics Director, the Lead Bioinformatics Specialist acts as a key expert in bioinformatics.

This role involves managing daily operations for the Bioinformatics Team, assigning tasks, and establishing timelines for various bioinformatics initiatives by setting clear team objectives.

The specialist will provide comprehensive project updates and data analysis to the Public Health Informatics Director and laboratory leadership. Responsibilities include developing and sustaining laboratory bioinformatics systems and workflows for managing microbiology sequencing data.

Additionally, the role encompasses creating and supporting analytical methods and strategies to streamline the workflow, pipelines, and analysis of sequencing data from production to variant interpretation.

Conducting statistical analyses or other bioinformatics evaluations to produce quality control reports, data outputs, visualizations, and high-quality graphics is essential.

The specialist will also offer consultation, technical guidance, and training in bioinformatics, while ensuring overall satisfaction of program partners through effective communication and collaboration. This position involves overseeing and coordinating bioinformatics projects and activities within the Laboratory, as well as planning and implementing new technologies and solutions.

Collaboration with Newborn Screening and Microbiological Sciences Group Managers is crucial to ensure integrated laboratory operations.

The duties require a high degree of professional knowledge, initiative, and independent judgment.

Key Responsibilities:

Regular attendance and adherence to agency leave policies are expected, along with performing other assigned duties.


KRA1.

(45%) With oversight from the Public Health Informatics Director, the specialist will supervise bioinformatics projects and daily operations by establishing team goals and deadlines.

This includes developing and maintaining bioinformatics systems and workflows for sequencing data management.

Collaboration with the Newborn Screening DNA Analysis and Advanced Molecular Microbiology Groups is necessary for genomic sequence data analysis to identify and interpret variants linked to microorganisms and newborn disorders.

The specialist will develop and implement bioinformatics tools, reference databases, and standardized workflows. Responsibilities also include quality control, assembly, annotation, and analysis of genome sequences with version control.

Creating standard operating procedures for bioinformatics analyses and managing genome sequence files and databases, including uploads to relevant sequence data banks, is essential.

Identifying and implementing effective techniques to customize, monitor, and troubleshoot bioinformatics workflows and data will ensure high-quality laboratory services.

Addressing deficiencies and quality issues will also be part of the role.



KRA2. (20%) The specialist will engage in customer service activities, effectively communicating with management and staff across all levels of the Laboratory.

Consultation with customers to identify their needs and resolve concerns is a key aspect of this role.

Providing technical advice, training, educational materials, and information on bioinformatics is expected.

Interaction with Clinical Care Coordination, consulting physicians, and epidemiologists will be necessary to review and enhance the performance of bioinformatics for clinical and surveillance purposes.

Building and maintaining positive working relationships is crucial. The specialist will investigate complaints and document problems and follow-up actions taken.

Compiling and creating written reports and visualizations of requested information and clinical or surveillance data will be required.

Presenting scientific data at local and national meetings, performing data reviews, computational and statistical analyses, and preparing scientific manuscripts for publication will also be part of the responsibilities.

Ensuring timely completion of activities and assignments is essential.



KRA3. (15%) The specialist will oversee and coordinate bioinformatics activities and projects for the Laboratory.

Planning and tracking tasks to ensure milestones are met within established timeframes, and reporting progress to management is required.

Consulting with internal and external partners on bioinformatics and genomic project planning and management is expected.

Collaboration with colleagues from other public health laboratories and institutions for shared resources and workflows is encouraged.



KRA4. (15%) The specialist will develop goals and manage resources effectively.

Staying informed about emerging bioinformatics tools and technologies for identifying newborn screening disorders and microorganisms through literature review and attendance at scientific meetings is necessary.

Participation in strategic planning activities to achieve short-term and long-term bioinformatics goals is expected.

Ensuring cost-effective infrastructure and optimizing data analysis workflows by facilitating the development and implementation of new tools, processes, and policies is essential.

The specialist will determine specifications and ensure the procurement and delivery of necessary equipment and software that comply with agency and regulatory standards.

KRA5.

(5%) Additional duties may include participating in disaster response and recovery efforts or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation, which may require alternate shift patterns or locations.

Ensuring adequate contingency plans for testing and compliance with laboratory guidelines is crucial.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
A solid understanding of public health laboratory roles.
Familiarity with molecular genetic testing.
Proficiency in Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and laboratory data.
