Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Laboratory Support Specialist II to join our team at the University of Maryland Medical System. As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for collecting blood samples, processing specimens, and providing exceptional customer service to our patients and healthcare providers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collect venous and capillary blood specimens according to established procedures and protocols.
  • Utilize a computerized system for logging and tracking specimen collection and patient information, ensuring accurate and complete data entry.
  • Properly identify and label specimens for processing, delivery, and storage, maintaining the highest level of quality and safety standards.
  • Operate simple medical laboratory equipment, such as centrifuges and microscopes, to process specimens and perform routine tests.
  • Effectively communicate with laboratory and medical staff to resolve problems and concerns regarding specimens and patient information.
  • Monitor pending work and resolve specimen issues as needed, ensuring timely and accurate results.
  • Sort and distribute laboratory reports and mail to appropriate personnel, maintaining a high level of organization and attention to detail.
  • Perform inventory and ordering of supplies, including requisitions for distribution to clients, ensuring adequate stock levels and minimizing waste.
  • Respond to telephone inquiries for test results, specimen status, and other general inquiries, providing accurate and timely information to patients and healthcare providers.
  • Assist with training new team members as needed, promoting a culture of knowledge sharing and professional growth.
  • Perform maintenance and troubleshoot instruments as needed, ensuring optimal performance and minimizing downtime.
  • Register patients in EPIC and enter orders in both LIS and HIS, maintaining accurate and up-to-date patient information.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to patients, healthcare providers, and internal stakeholders, ensuring a positive and respectful experience.
Qualifications

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Laboratory Support Specialist II with a strong background in phlebotomy and laboratory procedures. The ideal candidate will possess:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent (GED) and completion of an accredited program in phlebotomy.
  • Certification as a registered phlebotomist by a nationally recognized phlebotomy society, such as the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians.
  • A minimum of two years of work experience as a phlebotomist, preferably in a healthcare environment.
