Job Overview

At the University of Maryland Medical System, we are seeking a skilled Laboratory Support Technician II to join our team. As a key member of our laboratory team, you will play a vital role in ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of our laboratory operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collect blood samples from patients using venipuncture or finger or heel sticks, following established protocols and procedures.
  • Utilize a computerized system to log and track specimen collection and patient information, ensuring accurate and complete data entry.
  • Properly identify and label specimens for processing, delivery, and storage, maintaining the highest level of quality and safety.
  • Communicate effectively with laboratory and medical staff to resolve problems and concerns regarding specimens and to ensure proper identification and labeling.
  • Monitor pending work and resolve specimen issues as needed, ensuring timely and accurate results.
  • Sort and distribute laboratory reports and mail to appropriate personnel, maintaining a high level of organization and efficiency.
  • Perform inventory and ordering of supplies, including requisitions for distribution to clients, ensuring adequate stock levels and minimizing waste.
  • Fill supply requests for client needs, providing excellent customer service and support.
  • Respond to telephone inquiries for test results, specimen status, or other general inquiries, providing accurate and timely information.
  • Assist with training new team members as needed, sharing knowledge and expertise to ensure a smooth transition.
  • Perform maintenance and troubleshoot instruments as needed, ensuring optimal performance and minimizing downtime.
Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.
  • Completion of an accredited program in phlebotomy is preferred.
  • Certification as a registered phlebotomist by a nationally recognized Phlebotomy Society, such as the American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians, is preferred.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of work experience as a phlebotomist is preferred.
  • Experience in a healthcare environment is preferred.
