About the Role
The School Nurse is a vital member of our team, responsible for providing preventative health services to facilitate students' optimal physical, mental, emotional, and social growth and development.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with other agencies to design and implement a comprehensive school health program.
- Provide first aid care and medically prescribed services as needed.
- Disseminate relevant documentation and procedures related to student health services.
- Maintain the security of school health supplies and the privacy of student records.
- Serve as a resource person on health issues for students and staff.
- Provide professional development on health-related topics for school staff and volunteers.
- Screen and conduct health appraisals for students and staff.
- Provide follow-up evaluations as required.
- Recommend corrective action where problems regarding student health are identified.
- Correspond with parents on the health needs of children.
- Record immunizations, health findings, and other relevant health data.
- Monitor compliance with federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and policies.
- Prepare health reports for supervisors, the board of education, and the health department as mandated.
- Negotiate professional and medical services essential to the school health program.
- Initiate health program changes as needed.
- Work with staff and administration to support a healthy school environment.
- Create and deliver learning sessions to inform parents, students, or staff about health issues, solutions, and resources.
- Ensure students have up-to-date immunization records or appropriate waivers or notifications of deficiency on file.
- Ensure all students have received the necessary vision, hearing, and growth screenings.
- Serve as a resource to school staff members in health instruction.
- Coordinate school and community health activities and serve as a liaison health professional between the home, school, and community.
- Create Emergency and Individual Health Plans for students in need.
- Participate in IEP plan development and meetings when appropriate.
- Obtain students' health history, review, and evaluate history, and provide health assessments with a focus on students with regular medications, asthma, seizures, diabetes, and other identified health needs.
- Maintain, evaluate, and interpret cumulative health data to accommodate individual student needs.
- Screen and evaluate findings of deficits in vision, hearing, growth, etc.
- Provide ongoing health counseling with students, parents, school personnel, or health agencies.
- Utilize existing health resources to provide appropriate care for students.
Requirements
- Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Louisiana.
- RN license for at least 2 years.
- School Nurse experience preferred.
- Experience working with children preferred but not required.
- Experience with working with complex diagnoses.
- Certified in First Aid and CPR.
- Successful completion of State and Federal Criminal Background Check.
