Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Medical Assistant to join our team at Advocate Health. As a Medical Assistant, you will play a vital role in providing direct patient care, supporting our healthcare providers, and ensuring the smooth operation of our clinic.

Main Responsibilities
  • Direct Patient Care
    • Administer medications according to approved policy/procedure following protocol or provider order and monitor response.
    • Perform and document accurate vital signs, including temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiration, height, and weight.
    • Prepare patients for exams and treatments, and monitor their response.
    • Assist providers with procedures and treatments.
    • Encourage questions from patients and family, and offer supervised guidance to foster compliance with department protocols or provider/nurse instructions.
  • Indirect Patient Care
    • Order tests and assist in communicating results according to department protocol or as ordered by the provider.
    • Report abnormal findings, patient complaints, or concerns to physician or supervisor or nurse when appropriate.
    • Screen, prioritize, and complete messages, communicating information to patients in a timely manner.
    • Explain procedures and test results using language appropriate to patient's level of understanding, guided by department protocols or provider/nurse instructions.
    • Serve as an advocate and liaison between patients, staff, physicians, and external customers by sharing necessary information to ensure continuity of care.
    • Provide approved written patient education and discharge instructions.
    • Assist patients in obtaining additional services ordered by the provider prior to leaving the office as part of discharge planning and in setting up referrals for additional care.
  • Documentation
    • Provide consistent and accurate documentation of patient information, care, and concerns in the EMR according to the guidelines provided in the Documentation Policy and as otherwise instructed.
    • Complete vouchers, referrals, and requisitions with all appropriate information, including medical record number and services codes, or using EMR.
    • Complete all patient documentation within two full clinic business days after care and/or services have been provided according to the Missing Documentation policy guidelines.
  • Time Management
    • Consistently watchful of patient flow by keeping rooms clean, stocked, and available, and maintaining adequate inventory.
    • Check equipment and trays for proper functioning and availability in busy times.
    • Demonstrate flexibility by performing additional duties under the direction of licensed nursing staff or the provider.
    • Manage time and demonstrate resource management skills effectively to complete daily activities.
    • Know how and when to delegate tasks to others.
  • Telephone Communication
    • Answer the telephone promptly within three rings.
    • Complete all required customer service training and comply with scripting initiatives.
    • Display a courteous, alert, and pleasant tone of voice, speaking clearly and in a relaxed manner.
    • Restate information to ensure clarity and accuracy.
    • Transfer calls when appropriate, staying on the line and announcing where and why call was transferred.
    • Communicate effectively with internal and external customers.
    • Promote same-day appointment access and engage in achieving visit volume targets.
    Education/Experience Required

• Graduate from an accredited school with a clinical externship for medical assistant training (certification not required), graduate of Dreyer MA Program, or 2-3 years on-the-job training experience with knowledge of medical terminology.

• High school diploma or GED.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

• Good communication skills; both written and verbal.

• Good interpersonal and customer service skills.

• Basic keyboarding and typing skills.

• Ability to recognize needs and behaviors of age groups of patients treated; prior experience with such age groups is required.

• CPR certification required upon hire or within 60 days of hire.

• Certification/Registration required. Non-certified MAs must obtain certification or registration within one year of hire with AMG approved certifying bodies.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

• Must be able to successfully complete clinic-based training for all associates.

• Ability to work with all levels of personnel.

• Ability to work under stressful situations.

• Frequent periods of extended standing and sitting.

• Possible lifting and assisting of patients.

• Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance.
