GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Lead Radiation Therapist plays a crucial role within the Radiation Oncology team, primarily serving as a specialized patient care provider and supervisor in the Radiation Oncology Center.
This position entails overseeing all aspects related to the delivery of a prescribed Radiation Therapy regimen.
The Lead Radiation Therapist must exhibit strong attention to detail, the ability to work effectively under pressure, and a comprehensive understanding of complex medical protocols.
Effective verbal communication is essential, ensuring clear interactions with personnel, patients, and physicians to uphold high standards of patient care in alignment with the patient's treatment requirements.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/COMPETENCIESKey responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Assessing clinical environment needs and demonstrating appropriate follow-up actions.
- Conducting weekly chart reviews.
- Leading fellow therapists in delivering professional and courteous patient care.
- Maintaining shift reports and initial patient scheduling.
- Monitoring ICD 10 coding for the Clinical Practice Committee.
- Taking charge of machine calibration and coordinating service calls as needed.
- Collaborating with the Chief Radiation Therapist to implement clinical treatment techniques and procedures.
Accurately and efficiently administers daily prescribed Radiation Therapy treatments to patients assigned to the treatment unit, ensuring a pace that aligns with patient scheduling.
Adheres to all departmental policies regarding Radiation Therapy treatment protocols.
Prepares treatment rooms and equipment by gathering necessary supplies and setting up devices.
Sets appropriate parameters for treatment units, activates the equipment, and delivers the prescribed radiation dose.
Maintains visual and/or audible communication with patients throughout their treatment.
Obtains necessary port films as prescribed and makes adjustments to field placements as required.
Throughout the treatment process, monitors patients for any unusual reactions or events, reporting findings to the Clinical Director and Radiation Oncologist.
Ensures that immobilization devices are kept clean and orderly, utilizing them as directed by the Radiation Oncologist.
Keeps records of machine downtime and maintains a fault list report.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTSCERTIFICATIONS, LICENSURES, OR REGISTRY REQUIREMENTS:
- Certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (AART).
- Membership in the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT).
- IEMA state license is required.
- BLS certification is required; ACLS certification is preferred.
- Licensure and certifications as mandated by state regulations.
Possesses excellent organizational skills and the ability to perform effectively in high-pressure situations.
Familiarity with healthcare systems operations, including EMR and Practice Management Solutions.
Strong communication and customer service skills.
Ability to work independently while managing multiple deadlines.
Respects patient confidentiality and demonstrates database management skills.
Exhibits strong problem-solving abilities and clinical competencies.
Basic knowledge of Radiation Oncology equipment functions for minor repairs and troubleshooting.
Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
Demonstrates customer-oriented service while remaining calm in challenging situations.
Utilizes computer programs and applications, including Microsoft Office, effectively.
Builds relationships with patients, displaying empathy and compassion.
Complies with HIPAA regulations and all health and safety policies of the organization.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTSA high school diploma or equivalent is required.
A three (3) year certificate from a college or technical school in Radiation Therapy, certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT), is required.
Graduation from an AMA accredited program in Radiation Therapy Technology is mandatory.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTSA minimum of six months of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, is required.
