The role of a Commercial Surety Underwriter is highly specialized and technical within the underwriting sector. In this capacity, you will oversee comprehensive account management, drive business growth, and conduct in-depth analysis of a complex portfolio of Commercial Surety Accounts.
We are looking for a candidate who embodies a proactive mindset, possesses a robust financial background with expertise in credit evaluation, and demonstrates exceptional communication and presentation abilities. Strong time management skills and a talent for refining negotiation techniques are also essential.
Underwriters will adhere to the Zurich Way of Underwriting Framework while operating within designated authority levels on intricate assignments, ensuring exemplary service delivery to our clients.
This position presents an excellent opportunity for a seasoned Commercial Surety Underwriter to leverage their analytical capabilities and entrepreneurial drive, while fostering and maintaining relationships with our Brokers and Customers in the North Central region to generate profitable business.
This role may be filled at either the AVP (6T level) or VP (7T level), with the hiring manager determining the appropriate level based on the selected candidate's experience and qualifications.
Key Responsibilities:
- Actively pursue renewal and new account opportunities.
- Assess accounts to align with the organization's appetite while balancing sound business prospects.
- Negotiate terms and conditions effectively to finalize agreements.
- Cross-sell additional lines of business to enhance product density within accounts.
- Maintain updated records in required systems regarding broker/client interactions and account status within specified timelines.
- Accurately calculate target pricing by utilizing underwriting tools effectively.
- Identify and develop solutions for unique challenges faced by business units and customers.
- Exhibit specialized knowledge and expertise in products and industry standards.
- Administer and monitor underwriting policies, insurance regulations, and rating guidelines.
- Operate at the highest authority limits on assignments requiring advanced technical coordination.
Basic Qualifications for AVP:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent with 5+ years of experience in Underwriting, Market Facing, Finance, Accounting, or Banking; OR
- High School Diploma or Equivalent with 10+ years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support; OR
- Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 3+ years in Underwriting, Market Facing, Finance, Accounting, or Banking; OR
- Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 8+ years in Claims or Underwriting Support.
- High School Diploma or Equivalent with 7+ years of experience in Underwriting or Market Facing, Finance, Accounting, or Banking; OR
- High School Diploma or Equivalent with 14+ years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support; OR
- Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 5+ years in Underwriting or Market Facing; OR
- Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 12+ years in Claims or Underwriting Support.
- Bachelor's Degree.
- Experience and knowledge in Surety and understanding of legal and regulatory frameworks.
- Ability to analyze complex credit assessments, trends, and strategies.
- Curiosity and investigative skills to comprehend business strategies, trends, and complex contracts.
- Ability to clearly articulate strategies and financial concepts, leading to fact-based conclusions and recommendations.
- Prior experience in managing and growing a profitable customer portfolio.
- Negotiation experience with brokers and large organizations.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
