Job Summary

This position is responsible for examining, analyzing, and interpreting tax accounting records to determine compliance with federal and state laws, statutes, regulations, and generally accepted accounting and auditing standards. The successful candidate will conduct tax audits of corporations, businesses, and individuals, prepare and present audit reports, and provide guidance and interpretation of tax laws and regulations to taxpayers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct tax account audits of small to moderate-sized businesses or individual taxpayers, independently or as a member of an audit team.
  • Examine and test ledgers, journals, and other source documents to determine tax liability or other tax-related issues.
  • Apply sampling techniques to determine tax compliance and accuracy of taxpayers' tax reporting.
  • Review and analyze contracts to determine tax liability or other tax-related issues.
  • Verify the accuracy of taxpayers' tax reporting against source documents.
  • Plan the course of action for auditing the taxpayer.
  • Analyze, interpret, and apply appropriate tax laws, regulations, and rulings to situations revealed during the course of the audit.
  • Conduct tax audit research and fieldwork using internal and external data sources.
  • Evaluate taxpayer accounting systems and internal controls for adequacy and accuracy.
  • Discuss with supervisors audit selection, tax audit plan, appropriate tax laws, regulations, and rulings during phases of the tax audit.
  • Prepare audit reports to include narratives and schedules and submit audit results to supervisors for further review and action.
  • Keep taxpayers and/or taxpayer representatives informed and apprised of all phases of the tax audit process.
  • Assist Legal Services Bureau in legal matters related to audits performed, including participating in informal and formal conferences, providing depositions, and/or testifying at hearings or District Court.
  • May conduct or assist in special investigations of individual or business tax accounts.
  • Answer taxpayer inquiries.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or Taxation, including 12 semester hours of accounting or auditing.
  • Two years of experience in auditing, accounting, taxation, collections, or finance.
  • Four years of additional experience may substitute for the required Bachelor's degree.
  • Interacting with the public.
  • Working in high-pressure/high-stress situations.
  • Understanding of New Mexico Taxation & Revenue (TRD) statutes and regulations.
  • Assigning and directly supervising the work of employees.
  • Communicating in a clear and concise manner.
  • Conducting tax account audits on large businesses independently or as a lead auditor of an audit team.
  • Participating in internal and/or external financial or operational audits of accounting and other management control systems, which also involves legal issues.
  • MS Office programs, including Excel spreadsheets, and preparing technical reports and letters to varied audiences.
Working Conditions

This position is an office setting with extensive personal computer and telephone usage. The successful candidate must be able to lift 25 pounds and work in a loud noise area. The position requires frequent interaction with the public, including occasional irate customers, and frequent multiple demands from several people. Travel is required, both in-state and out-of-state, depending on business need.
