Position Title: Staff Accountant
Reporting To: Controller
The Air Force Aid Society (AFAS) serves as the official charity for the United States Air Force (USAF) and the United States Space Force (USSF). Established in 1942, AFAS addresses the distinct needs of Airmen and Guardians by providing financial, educational, and community support, thereby enhancing the missions of the USAF and USSF.
Position Summary:
The Staff Accountant will collaborate closely with the Controller to uphold the financial integrity of AFAS, ensuring the delivery of accurate and timely information. This role encompasses various functions within AFAS, including internal controls, month-end closing processes, donation tracking, accounts payable, and data entry. A solid understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and strong financial analytical skills are essential. The Staff Accountant will also assist other departments with finance and accounting-related inquiries as necessary. Success in this role requires effective time management and exceptional organizational skills.
This is a full-time position that is eligible for benefits.
Key Responsibilities:
- Reconcile and manage AFAS' receivables and allowances for doubtful accounts.
- Review Income Statement accounts for accuracy and appropriate classifications.
- Examine AI-generated Accounts Payable invoices prior to integration into the general ledger.
- Ensure timely recording of all automated ACH payments.
- Verify that all received checks are entered into the correct system and deposited promptly.
- Review the Controller's list of schedules on a monthly basis.
- Assist the Controller with month-end closing procedures to guarantee timely reporting.
- Support the Controller with IRS 990 filings and other tax or registration submissions.
- Provide general accounting assistance to the Controller and other departments.
- Prepare various audit schedules requested by auditors during AFAS' annual financial audit.
- Oversee AFAS' internal control testing program, ensuring adequate controls are established and utilized correctly.
- Update necessary data for Charity Navigator annually.
- Assist with day-to-day project management tasks and weekly meetings as required.
- Deliver monthly financial reporting to Marketing & Development.
- Perform additional duties as assigned, as this list represents key functions but is not exhaustive.
Qualifications:
To excel in this role, candidates must demonstrate the ability to perform essential duties satisfactorily. The following qualifications are required:
- Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office in a Windows environment.
- Experience with accounting and financial reporting systems.
- Comprehensive knowledge of basic accounting procedures.
- In-depth understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Ability to meet deadlines and perform well under pressure.
- Team-oriented individual who shows sensitivity to the organization's history and culture, with the ability to collaborate effectively.
Preferred Skills, Education & Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting.
- Six years of staff accounting experience may substitute for a bachelor's degree.
- At least two years of experience in an accounting role, preferably within nonprofit organizations.
- U.S. work authorization is required for this position.
Communication Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business publications, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Proficient in writing reports, business correspondence, and procedural manuals. Capable of effectively presenting information and responding to inquiries from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Proficient in applying concepts of algebra, statistics, and geometry.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Capable of interpreting a wide variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and managing several abstract and concrete variables.
Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands to manipulate objects, reach with hands and arms, and communicate verbally. The employee may occasionally be required to stand and walk and must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
