Radiation Therapist Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Radiation Therapist to join our team at Advocate Health. As a Radiation Therapist, you will play a critical role in administering radiation therapy treatments to patients with cancer.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Administer radiation therapy treatments in compliance with physician prescriptions and treatment plans.
  • Reproduce setup in the treatment room as indicated in treatment charts, utilizing appropriate positioning aides.
  • Maintain visual and audible contact with patients at all times.
  • Report errors to the Supervisor, Radiation Oncology.
  • Report pertinent information regarding patient care to the Supervisor, Radiation Oncology.
  • Maintain accurate treatment records.
  • Accurately record variations in daily treatment in the IMPAC management system.
  • Assure proper billing and statistics are done with each patient treatment.
  • Assure dose addition is accurate on a daily basis.
  • Assist physicians in localizing tumor volumes using radiographic techniques.
  • Measure and record parameters for reproducibility of setup.
  • Perform planning CTs to exact specifications directed by physicians.
  • Utilize treatment aides or immobilization devices per Radiation Oncology standards.
  • Create electronic patient charts according to Radiation Oncology standards and current practice/procedure.
  • Utilize On Board Imaging for imaging and field size verification.
  • Compute dose calculations utilizing treatment parameters and data according to departmental standards for emergency patients.
  • Interpret computer plans and adapt them for usage in the treatment room.
  • Perform and record daily and weekly QA machine checks.
  • Observe and report any malfunction or operational problem to the Service Engineer or Supervisor.
  • Assure checks are being done as scheduled per departmental and state requirements.
  • Participate in the early morning warm-up program.
  • Assist in the orientation and education of patients regarding treatments and side effects.
  • Reinforce Radiation Oncologist and nurse's advice regarding side effects.
  • Report any unusual side effects to Nursing and/or Radiation Oncologist.
  • Facilitate patient and family participation in self-care based on age and disease.
  • Refer patients to Nursing and/or Radiation Oncologist if problems are identified.
  • Explain procedures to be performed to patients.
  • Instruct and supervise Radiation Therapy students while training at the facility.
  • Instruct students on the safe usage of equipment according to departmental standards and procedures.
  • Supervise students at all times during treatment setup and simulation.
  • Evaluate students on performance in a timely fashion as requested by the Education Director.
  • Assure a safe, clean, and sanitary environment for patients and personnel.
  • Routinely clean patient treatment areas.
  • Routinely clean patient positioning supplies.
  • Appearance and uniform comply with departmental standards.
Requirements:
  • ARRT registry-eligible or ARRT license.
  • IDNS license.
  • BLS Certified.
  • Radiation Oncology Certificate and/or Associates degree in Radiation Therapy Technology.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Developing ability to work as a team player.
  • Developing ability to work with ill patients and families in an empathetic fashion.
  • Computer knowledge.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • This position requires heavy lifting of equipment and patients.
  • Must be able to lift 20lbs repeatedly.
  • Standard precautions for dealing with body substances and hazardous materials.
  • Standard precautions for radiation safety as per IDNS.
