Position Overview
This role involves executing proficient tasks in the mechanical repair and upkeep of gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and heavy machinery utilizing standard practices and tools of the automotive industry. The position also includes operating certain heavy machinery.
Key Responsibilities
Automotive Repair and Maintenance
- Diagnose, analyze, and tune engines, including testing, cleaning, and replacing spark plugs, adjusting timing, valves, and carburetor components.
- Disassemble and inspect major units such as engines and transmissions for wear, followed by reassembly.
- Repair and substitute components like pistons, rods, gears, and bearings.
- Overhaul and replace critical parts including carburetors, generators, and alternators.
- Rewire ignition systems and lighting components.
- Realign and adjust braking systems, and repair or replace shock absorbers.
- Install or repair accessories such as radios and windshield wipers.
- Perform additional repairs as necessary.
- Diagnose malfunctions and execute repairs, rebuilds, and maintenance on heavy construction machinery including motor graders and bulldozers.
- Replace defective engines and subassemblies.
- Repair or replace major components and attachments.
- Weld to mend broken or damaged frames and metal parts.
- Replace fluids and batteries as required.
- Repair or replace tires.
- Conduct related mechanical tasks as needed.
- Operate equipment and perform manual labor as necessary.
- Test repaired machinery to confirm operational efficiency.
- Oversee other personnel engaged in equipment maintenance.
- Provide recommendations for specifications regarding new equipment procurement.
- Ensure the vehicle and equipment fleet is maintained in safe operational condition.
- Maintain accurate records of repairs and maintenance performed.
- Must possess a valid commercial driver's license (CDL - Class A).
- Experience in automotive and heavy equipment repair and maintenance is essential.
- Willingness to work non-standard hours as necessary.
- Ability to travel for parts and materials as needed.
- Uniforms are required as directed by the County Engineer.
- Effective verbal communication skills.
- Proficient writing skills for completing forms and ordering parts.
- Ability to read and comprehend equipment manuals and instructions.
- Mathematical skills for precision measurements.
- Listening skills to understand equipment issues.
- Proficient in using hand and machine tools for automotive repair.
- Ability to operate various types of equipment.
- Strong analytical skills for diagnosing mechanical problems.
- Knowledge of safety protocols and first aid procedures.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Familiarity with county policies and procedures.
- Ability to work on Tier 4 engine components.
- Physical capability to lift 50 pounds unassisted and perform necessary physical tasks.
