Position Overview:
Are you eager to contribute to a leading institution in scientific and engineering research? The University of Dayton is seeking qualified individuals for the role of Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) Research Engineer within our Structural Materials division.
This position focuses on experimental techniques, modeling, and simulation to advance both fundamental and applied research in materials characterization and nondestructive evaluation. The successful candidate will work closely with the Materials & Manufacturing Directorate, specifically the Materials State Awareness Branch.
The primary objective of this research is to enhance the evaluation of ceramic, polymer, and carbon matrix composites by integrating or modifying NDE techniques, including ultrasonics, electrical impedance tomography, electromagnetic methods, and thermography.
Essential Qualifications:- Advanced studies in applied mathematics, engineering, computer science, physics, or a related discipline.
- A minimum of two years of relevant experience.
- Proficiency in modeling the response of composite materials and/or analyzing material signal interactions using finite element methods or similar numerical techniques.
- Familiarity with MATLAB or other scientific programming languages such as Python.
- Experience with laboratory instrumentation, including lock-in amplifiers, oscilloscopes, multimeters, and power supplies.
- Strong written communication abilities.
- Interest in collaborating with a diverse team of scientists.
- Commitment to publishing research findings in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at conferences.
- Due to federal research contract requirements, candidates must be U.S. Citizens.
While not all candidates will possess every preferred qualification, the ideal applicant will have many of the following:
- PhD in applied mathematics, engineering, computer science, physics, or a related field.
- Proven experience in developing multimodal physics-based numerical models.
- Experience in test system development, including the integration of instrumentation.
- Experience working within diverse communities.
- Knowledge of inverse problems and optimization techniques.
- Application of registration, segmentation, and classification methodologies on sensor data.
- Prior experience in writing and publishing articles in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at conferences.
