Medical Assistant Cardiology Specialist

At Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, we are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Medical Assistant Cardiology to join our team. As a Medical Assistant Cardiology, you will play a vital role in providing exceptional patient care and supporting our clinical operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Control and monitor patient flow to maximize efficient use of providers and exam rooms.
- Prepare medical records for patient visits, confirming accuracy with patient identifiers, and entering chief complaint and social history.
- Exercise a high degree of customer service in all interactions with patients, internal and external customers.
- Assist providers, patients, and families with admitting patients into the hospital, making out clothing lists, and facilitating smooth transitions to inpatient units.
- Escort patients to exam rooms, prepare patients for provider visits, and check to ensure patient comfort, privacy, and safety.
- Perform and record vital signs, review medication lists with patients, and collect specimens as needed.
- Perform Point of Care Testing (POC) as ordered, including urine dips, HCG testing, Strep A, HGB A1C, and glucose testing.
- May be required to perform phlebotomy.
- Assist with patient billing, ensuring CPT code, diagnosis code, and all supplies and procedures are indicated on charting.
- Ensure outside paperwork is scanned into patients' electronic medical records, process and track referrals and prior authorizations as requested/ordered by providers.
- Use proper techniques and procedures for hazardous waste disposal, universal precautions, and body mechanics.
- Stock, maintain, and rotate supplies in clinic rooms daily, monitor expiration dates, and maintain equipment.
- Participate in unit-specific quality improvement projects, such as hand-washing audits, time-outs, refrigerator/medication logs, and daily/monthly code cart checks.
- Provide administrative support, including coordinating interpreter services, answering telephone calls, taking accurate messages, forwarding messages, and faxing.
- Act as a preceptor for training new hires and MA student externs, participate in peer education, and maintain sensitive and confidential patient information according to HIPAA.
Requirements:
- Completed MA education from an accredited program or graduated within 36 months prior to the program becoming accredited.
- Medical Assistant National Certification Attestation issued by a governing body (AAMA, AMT, NCCT, or NHA).
- Basic Life Support Certification.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Two (2) years of medical office experience.
- Phlebotomy Certification.
- Bi-Lingual.
- Experience with electronic patient record systems.
Physical Requirements:
- Frequent standing and walking for up to 80% of the workday or shift.
- Some lifting, pushing, or pulling required.
- Occasional stress and pressure caused by multiple simultaneous demands.
- Exposed to various body fluids along with exposure to infectious disease and sharps.
- Occasional requests to change work areas to cover another priority area to meet patient needs.
- Frequent contact with patients, families, visitors, nurses, and other department staff.
Skills & Abilities:
- Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail required.
- Ability to prioritize work and complete tasks in a timely manner.
- Basic to moderate computer skills, including documents, spreadsheets, e-mail, and automated scheduling software.
- Ability to read, write, and spell in English to ensure accurate message taking.
- Knowledge of business math, ability to make calculations, and analytical skills required.
- Good interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge and ability to use universal precautions and knowledge of patient handling.
- Ability to complete and pass competency exams in waived test lists for practice.
- Ability to maintain sensitive and confidential patient information according to HIPAA.
- Skills and knowledge necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span, with consideration of aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
