Key Responsibilities

As a Hydrology Field Specialist within the U.S. Department of the Interior, your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Gathering and recording field data.
  • Managing and updating field data in digital systems.
  • Installing equipment in various outdoor settings.
  • Conducting routine maintenance and troubleshooting of field instruments.
Physical Requirements: The role often necessitates significant physical dexterity, agility, and exertion, including: climbing or working from elevated structures; navigating hazardous terrains such as slippery riverbanks or steep inclines; lifting heavy items exceeding 23 kilograms (50 pounds); and maneuvering in confined spaces.

Work Environment: Office settings typically do not require special safety measures; however, fieldwork may involve extreme weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow; hazardous situations such as ice or flooding; or exposure to potentially harmful substances. Personal protective equipment may be necessary, including masks, gloves, boots, goggles, or life jackets.

Employment Conditions

Essential Requirements:

  • Applicants must be U.S. Citizens.
  • Must be suitable for Federal employment, as determined by a background check.
  • Participation in the Recent Graduates program is considered a trial period.
  • Additional requirements are detailed under Qualifications and Other Information.
  • A valid state driver's license and a safe driving record are mandatory.
  • A pre-employment medical examination is required.

Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the Pathways Recent Graduate Program, candidates must meet the following:

  • Have completed an associate, bachelor’s, master’s, professional, doctorate, vocational, or technical degree or certificate from an accredited institution within the last two years.
  • Veterans who were unable to apply due to military service may begin their eligibility period upon discharge from active duty, not exceeding six years from the date of degree or certificate attainment.
  • This position involves official travel; the selected candidate must apply for a government charge card within 30 days of appointment.
  • The Recent Graduate Program lasts for one year, with potential for conversion to a permanent or term appointment upon successful completion.
  • Communication during the recruitment process will be conducted via email; candidates must ensure their email address remains active.
  • A background investigation is necessary, and continued employment is contingent upon successful completion of this investigation.

Qualifications

Qualification Standards

For GS-05: Candidates must meet one of the following criteria:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 level in the Federal service, related to the duties of this position. Relevant experience may include work as a technician or aide in engineering, earth sciences, or surveying; trades or crafts work in the maintenance or construction of hydrological equipment; or drafting if it provided the necessary skills to perform the job effectively.

Examples of GS-4 level tasks include: 1) Making adjustments and minor repairs to water monitoring equipment; 2) Following established methods to compile and present geological or hydrological data; 3) Editing record tapes and correcting data based on field observations.

**OR Completion of a full four-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree in a relevant field of science or engineering is acceptable.

**OR A combination of relevant education and specialized experience may be considered to meet the qualifications for GS-5.

For GS-06: Candidates must meet one of the following criteria:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 level in the Federal service, related to the duties of this position. Relevant experience may include work as a technician or aide in engineering, earth sciences, or surveying; trades or crafts work in the maintenance or construction of hydrological equipment; or drafting if it provided the necessary skills to perform the job effectively.

Examples of GS-05 level tasks include: 1) Preparing maps and profiles for water monitoring; 2) Installing and servicing water data collection instruments; 3) Analyzing hydrological data and preparing reports.

**OR Completion of one year of appropriate graduate-level education in hydrology or a related field may substitute for the required experience.

**OR A combination of appropriate specialized experience and graduate-level education may be used to meet the qualification requirements.

For GS-07: Candidates must meet one of the following criteria:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 level in the Federal service, related to the duties of this position. Relevant experience may include work as a technician or aide in engineering, earth sciences, or surveying; trades or crafts work in the maintenance or construction of hydrological equipment; or drafting if it provided the necessary skills to perform the job effectively.

Examples of GS-06 level tasks include: 1) Measuring stream discharge and collecting water samples; 2) Conducting technical studies of hydrological data and preparing materials for publication.

**OR Completion of one year of appropriate graduate-level education in hydrology or a related field may substitute for the required experience.

**OR A combination of appropriate specialized experience and graduate-level education may be used to meet the qualification requirements.

Education Standards:

  • Experience includes both paid and unpaid work, including volunteer service through National Service programs and other organizations. Volunteer work can enhance critical competencies and skills relevant to paid employment.
