Position Summary:

The Staff Accountant III will operate under the guidance of the Accounting & Audit Manager, employing independent judgment to execute a variety of accounting functions. This role encompasses both hands-on responsibilities and leadership duties, handling advanced and specialized accounting tasks that often involve intricate and confidential data. The Staff Accountant III will gather and analyze financial data to generate reports, statements, and recommendations, while also providing guidance to other accounting personnel and collaborating with technical experts to achieve objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the aggregation of financial data and the preparation of journal entries based on thorough analysis, including internal allocations.
  • Engage in assessments of technical financial reporting solutions from diverse sources, utilizing sound technical insight into accounting principles.
  • Contribute to the creation of dashboards, report graphics, and presentation materials, ensuring high accuracy and design quality.
  • Conduct financial reporting in accordance with sponsor requirements, monitoring awards for allowability and reasonableness of charges, while investigating variances and approving expenses.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers regarding project status and opportunities for additional billing.
  • Support the development of special reports for reconciliations and internal control processes as needed.
  • Work closely with programs and managers to identify information needs, designing and implementing new reporting tools.
  • Assist with bi-weekly payroll processing in the absence of colleagues, ensuring accurate payment to employees.
  • Reconcile payroll journal entries within the accounting software.
  • Ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles and company policies.
  • Review and rectify errors in financial entries and reports.
  • Research and suggest modifications to accounting systems and controls.
  • Make recommendations for enhancing the organization's accounting operations.
  • Maintain records retention of accounting documents and financial reports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the successful operation of the organization.

Leadership and Interaction:

  • This role does not entail supervisory responsibilities.
  • Engage effectively with EarthScope staff and partner organizations.
  • Promote a professional culture through strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ensure clear communication with team members to meet deadlines and adhere to best practices.

Qualifications:

Minimum Education & Experience:

Tier 1 – Salary $77,748 - $97,080.50

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • At least four (4) years of experience in a senior accountant role or higher.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in grant management or federal award accounting.
  • Hands-on experience with Deltek CostPoint 8 (Candidates will be assessed).
  • Proficiency in MS Excel and accounting software.

Preferred Skills:

  • Deltek CostPoint User Certification.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA).

Tier 2 – Salary $97,000 - $116,622

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in a senior accountant role or higher.
  • At least four (4) years of experience in grant management or federal award accounting.
  • Hands-on experience with Deltek CostPoint 8 (Candidates will be assessed).
  • Proficiency in MS Excel and accounting software.

Preferred Skills:

  • Deltek CostPoint User Certification.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
  • Experience in government contracting or grant environments.

Additional Requirements:

  • Availability consistent with EarthScope's established practices; hours may exceed 40 hours per week, especially during travel.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, walk, and sit frequently.
  • Manual dexterity for hand and finger tasks.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 10 pounds.
