Job Title: Community Development Director

At the City of Hermosa Beach, CA, we are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Community Development Director to join our team. As a key member of our organization, you will play a critical role in shaping the future of our community.

Job Summary:

The Community Development Director will be responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating the activities of the Community Development Department, including planning, building, and safety, and code enforcement programs, services, and activities. This position will also serve as a liaison to the City's Planning Commission and provide highly responsible and complex administrative support to the City Manager and the City Council.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Plan, organize, direct, and coordinate the activities of the Community Development Department.
  • Develop and implement departmental goals, objectives, and priorities for each assigned service area.
  • Provide training and supervision for all divisions of the department.
  • Conduct staff meetings and prepare reports on current issues for the City Manager and the City Council.
  • Provide support and advice to the City Manager and the City Council in resolving problems, formulating policy, and developing the City's organizational development programs.
  • Attend a variety of meetings, including Planning Commission and City Council meetings.
  • Develop, implement, and interpret departmental policies consistent with City Council and City Manager directives.
  • Develop, monitor, and control the department budget.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with the public.
  • Meet with a variety of individuals and groups to provide information, enlist support, resolve issues, plan, and coordinate department activities.
Requirements:
  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in urban planning, public administration, architecture, engineering, or a related field.
  • Six years of progressively responsible experience in at least one area of community development, four years of which were in a responsible supervisory position.
  • Certification by the American Institute of City Planners (AICP) or a related organization is desirable.
  • Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License with a safe driving record is required and must be maintained as valid during the course of employment.
