Baltimore, Maryland, United States Johns Hopkins University Full time

Job Req ID:

Clinical Laboratory Coordinator

The Pathology Department is in search of a dedicated professional who, under the guidance of the laboratory supervisor or Faculty/Principal Investigator, executes a range of both standard and intricate clinical and research laboratory evaluations. In the absence of a Laboratory Manager, this role will serve as the primary technical authority for other laboratory personnel and will oversee the daily operations of the designated laboratory, which includes managing workload and staff schedules, ensuring quality control, maintaining inventory, overseeing equipment upkeep, and adhering to the divisional quality assurance protocols for the assigned lab. This position demands a high level of expertise to accurately perform and interpret results, particularly in cases where results deviate from the norm. Specific responsibilities may vary based on assigned rotations. The incumbent will ensure compliance with institutional and departmental policies and procedures across all shifts. Additionally, the role involves assisting in the formulation and management of laboratory budgets, along with other related administrative and professional tasks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engage actively in laboratory testing within the Immunofluorescence Laboratory, including but not limited to specimen accessioning, grossing of small samples, frozen tissue sectioning, and performing immunofluorescence staining procedures using both manual and automated techniques.
  • Oversee daily laboratory operations, including procedural documentation, project status updates, and billing outcomes in accordance with regulations.
  • Utilize analytical skills to operate technical equipment, conduct tests with utmost precision, and correlate test results with healthy states and disease presence. Contribute to the specification, design, implementation, and enhancement of Immunofluorescence-related projects.
  • Prepare test plan data to guarantee quality and integrity.
  • Train new staff, manage workloads and schedules, participate in staff performance evaluations, and assist in recruitment, interviewing, and hiring processes for laboratory personnel. Provide orientation, training, and development for laboratory staff.
  • Conduct quality assurance activities, including equipment monitoring and maintenance, antibody quality assurance, and troubleshooting. Report any discrepancies in quality assurance as per established procedures. Aid in the development and revision of laboratory policies and procedures. Prepare the assigned laboratory area for regulatory reviews.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities

  • Attention to detail and precision are crucial.
  • Strong analytical skills to operate technical equipment, perform tests accurately, and relate test results to both normal and pathological states. Ability to work independently while determining suitable procedures and methods for obtaining test results.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, along with strong interpersonal and training abilities. Must effectively communicate with healthcare professionals and other personnel. Capable of interpreting directions, organizing and prioritizing tasks, and following through on assignments. Ability to collaborate successfully as part of a team in a high-volume, dynamic laboratory environment.

Work Environment

  • This position may require the employee to remain stationary (sitting or standing) for up to 65% of the time. Occasionally, the employee will need to move throughout the laboratory or retrieve equipment, supplies, or specimens from various locations.
  • Prolonged visual requirements include viewing computer screens, paper reports, charts, and results. Visual acuity is necessary to distinguish fine gradations of color or structure and to closely examine specimens.
  • Laboratory conditions may expose staff to toxins and infectious agents, though risks are minimized by adhering to established safety protocols. The work environment may present discomforts due to odors, noise, temperature fluctuations, and proximity to laboratory equipment.
  • Transporting equipment and supplies, typically weighing less than 40 pounds, may be required. Lifting or moving up to 50 pounds may also be necessary with appropriate training and precautions.
  • Staff may need to complete annual competency reviews and ensure compliance with hospital policies, laboratory procedures, health, safety, and environmental regulations, as well as applicable privacy and confidentiality laws.
  • Many laboratories operate 24/7, necessitating schedules that may include day, evening, or night shifts, as well as rotating schedules that could involve weekend and holiday assignments. This position requires attendance during unexpected university closures, including inclement weather or emergencies.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: BA/BS or equivalent in Biology, Chemistry, Histology, or a related field.
  • Three (3) years of experience in a laboratory setting is required.
  • A Master's Degree with relevant graduate research may substitute for experience as permitted by the equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • (ASCP) certification is preferred but not mandatory.
