Job Summary

This position provides effective legal representation, either personally or by retaining and supervising outside counsel that handles moderately complex litigation involving either the corporation and/or its insured within established corporate guidelines and the applicable code of professional responsibility.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage Litigation: Handle litigation involving either the corporation and/or its insureds within established corporate guidelines and the applicable code of professional responsibility.
  • Case Analysis: Analyze files as litigation progresses. Evaluate cases and seek settlement as necessary.
  • Discovery: Conduct discovery (e.g. written interrogatories, requests for production of documents, and depositions).
  • Motion Practice: Conduct motion practice.
  • Pleadings and Briefs: Draft all necessary pleadings, papers and briefs to advance litigation. Conduct necessary research in support of drafting activities.
  • Client Advocacy: Advocate client position in all forums (state and federal court, alternative dispute resolution, administrative tribunals and regulatory hearings) and circumstances, both formal and informal.
  • Trial and Settlement: Handle defense of litigated matters up to and through trial, as well as at mediations, settlement conferences and arbitration.
  • Statutory and Case Law: Stay current on state statutes and court decisions and analyze how statutes and court decisions affect the interpretation and enforceability of the various policy provisions.
  • Specialized Practice: May have or develop areas of specialty practice (e.g. special property, workers' compensation, environmental law, commercial coverage).
Requirements
  • Customer-Driven Solutions: Demonstrated experience providing customer-driven solutions, support or service.
  • Civil Pleadings and Discovery: Demonstrated experience preparing civil pleadings, motions and discovery and deposing witnesses.
  • Litigation Experience: Demonstrated litigation experience.
  • Professional Responsibility: Solid knowledge and understanding of rules of Professional Responsibility for the jurisdiction in which they practice.
  • Tort, Contract, and Insurance Law: Solid knowledge and understanding of tort, contract, and insurance law.
  • Admission to the Bar: Admitted to the California state bar.
  • Juris Doctor: Juris Doctor.
Work Environment
  • Travel Requirements: Up to 50%.
